San Onofre State Beach, near San Clemente CA

When making reservations there with reserveamerica, there were only 4 spaces available total. However, having stayed for days, the RV spots were almost completely empty. The RV sections alternate with tent camping, group camping, and day use.

The beach access is by a trail losing 200 ft altitude and goes for about 1/4 mile. The beach is narrow and there is more rock than beach. Only interesting find we had was a tidal pool.

For where we were, there was a trail 3 north and a trail 3 south. The south trail is dangerous and difficult. The north 3 trail was fairly nice and negotiable.

After talking to several other campers, it seems that many people camp there at night, then go to other state beaches during the day. Your paid camping sticker gets you into the other state beaches at no charge. San Onofre surfing beach is good, San Clemente SB is good, and Doheny SB is good. Access to San Onofre is not findable with Bing maps, but there is a gate for the surfing beach and directions are available there.

The trail tracks run very close to the camps. For us, no problem because we like trains. However, it was also very close to a truck weigh station and the loudspeaker sounded 24 hours a day.

There are no hookups at all at San Onofre. Regarding MH in tent spots I suspect not, but you should call them for the best info. It seems to me more likely you could get a MH spot and use a tent there.

San Onofre is the one local area I haven't tried. It seems to be the less full compared to Crystal Cove, Doheny, and San Clemente.

Do they allow smaller motorhomes to use the tent spots? In Crystal Cove I can get my 24' into the front rows of non hookup spots.

I like Crystal Cove, Doheny, and San Clemente in the off season Oct through most of May. There are many wonderful beach days off season. I had a great trip to San Clemente the week before New Years. Stayed in a non hookup spot-the area was probably less than 25% occupied. Hookup spots had higher occupancy percentage.
