South Dakota

Part of our spring ride home from Tx is between Mount Rushmore to Mall of America. We are looking for a popular and scenic destination between the two.
  • A lot of miles of flat farmland between the two. I think it is beautiful in the spring but not really known as a scenic destination. The Badlands NP is worth a day trip, Corn Palace at Mitchell is worth an hour or so, some nice parks, museums and galleries in Sioux Falls, Laura Ingalls Wilder homestead in DeSmet, Terry Redlin gallery in Watertown. Look at SD state parks website for ideas.
  • Must stop at Badlands National Park and Wall Drug - the loop through the park actually starts on the West end at Wall

The Falls in Sioux Fall are very interesting
  • I think it is a state law that everyone has to stop at Wall Drug. At least they had people stopping cars on the outskirts of town the last two times I passed through. They said it was a survey...but there were a number of Highway Patrol cars around....
  • Theodore Roosevelt NP in Medora, ND. Stay at the Municipal campground in the summer because it has a pool.

The falls are great, but so is the Butterfly House and Marine Cove. It is a GREAT place to stop.

The natural way to drive would be south out of Minneapolis and then west through SD. When I make the drive I do not even come close to ND
