This year on our trip to The Keys we want to stop in the South Miami area for the night and have a peak at The Coral Castle.
What is everyones recommendations on where to stay for the night?
I've heard they frown on overnighting in the TP Rest Stops. Is that right?

Thanx for all the replies! ๐Ÿ™‚

We use truck stops the whole trip south and will probably do so...in South Fl as well...per your advise. We feel more secure in them than WalMart!

Just make sure you do not boon-dock in Monroe county. (The Keys)

Strictly enforced and big fines.
Our Rig:

2006 Outback 27 RSDS

We also have with us two rescue dogs. A Chihuahua mix & a Catahoula mix.

We've stayed in the parking lot of the Miccosukee Resort & Gaming Casino at 41 and Chrome Avenue. They have a special section for RVs, no charge for overnight camping, and 24 hour security on site.

While we avoid the slots, we do partake of their buffet.

Easy access to the keys via Chrome Avenue.

This is always our stop in that area, when going and coming from Key West. Great buffet.

Those signs are only in a few "select" rest areas and are NOT FL law, they are FDOT rules, without any teeth. They are posted as a tool for the LEO community, if they have a problem, but otherwise are not enforced.

We generally use Everglades Miami, but have also used Larry and Penny. Both are good locations and a reasonable drive to the Castle.
Another option would be Southern Comfort in Homestead...we stay there for the NASCAR races.

That's been my experience too, it allows an official to point at the sign and tell someone to move along.

I've had a few instances where I spoke to police or security guards in rest areas (with time limits) late in the evening and been told that not only it was ok, but that they'd keep an eye on us.

Probably no different than the "30 minute" time limits on restaurant tables. A tool to deal with a select few.

We always use Miami Everglades RV park in South Florida on our way to the Keys

Reviews of the park

Larry & Penny Thompson Park & Campground is a city park near the Miami Zoo in Kendall(?) area of Miami. We stay for 6 months in early spring 1992. Full hook ups. Good security in the park. LOTS of space. Low cost. Hurricane in 1992 damaged the area, but I am sure that it has rebuilt now.
Please give me enough troubles, uncertainty, problems, obstacles and STRESS so that I do not become arrogant, proud, and smug in my own abilities, and enough blessings and good times that I realize that someone else is in charge of my life.

I've never had a problem staying at the TP rest areas. I was a truck driver for over 15 years and now an rv'er. I think those signs are for those who are a nuisance to others. When we go to Key West, we enjoy a few days either at Everglades Rv Park in the Miami area or stop in Key Largo.

Enjoy your time in the Keys and say Hi to the Cat Man at Mallory Square.
