Spots to stay near Helena Montana

We are starting to plan a trip to the section of Montana from Virginia City up to Helena. Does anyone have any favorite spots to stay (dog friendly) that are near the water? We both enjoy fishing, and of course the Lab loves to swim.

This is sort of a family research trip, as my husband's great-grandfather lived in the area during the 1800s. We are planning to stop in at the Montana Historical Society in Helena and also check things out in the .Virginia City/Ennis area.

Thanks!
  • We didn't stay near Helena but we went up and down western Montana last summer and we were surprised at how many lakes and rivers there were.
  • we didn't stay there but Black Sandy State Park northeast of Helena gets good reviews. 50 amp electric. Potable water and no sewer. There are also several BLM campgrounds in the area but no hookups. There is also a KOA in Townsend.
