With 40 years of camping experience, we have learned that the most effective insect control at the camp site is an electric fan. In the summer we carry 3 large ones with us.

You will find more shells if you walk up the beach to the Eastern end of the island. Yes, the mosquitoes are plentiful. Plan to spray down as soon as you get out of your trailer. The truck drove through to spray but I think it would have been more effective if they sprayed the foliage behind the sites. There was standing water in the brush. I think there is a quick shop, a few gift shops, ice machine on the island. There are a few places to eat.

I have been there twice with no mosquitoes, but it was either fall or spring - not summer.

Depending on where you are in the campground the walk to the beach would probably be longer than most would care for.

Regarding stores, the closest are about 5 miles from the campground - half of that through the state park itself. Speed limit is 25-35mph, so it is not a quick trip.

You will have bugs in almost all FL state parks (at least I did, in everyone I have been in). Some sites are worse than others, even within a single park or campground loop. Now saying that does not mean that state parks are bad places, I much prefer them over the commercial parks I have stayed in. I love the remote, wooded (or shrubbed) sites most state parks have, so I tend to chose them for places to visit. I always laugh when I read the reviews that give a state park a bad review because there are bugs. Bugs are part of the entire south and you just can't escape them sometimes.

Misquitos are very, very, very bad in the campground. Not so bad on the beach, because of the breeze.

Bugs (mosquitos) will eat you alive in CG but no problem on the beach, pretty good walk to the beach. Shopping requires a trip back to the main road on/off the island and is limited. Apalachicola is a short drive away and has excellent seafood dining. Not sure about fireworks.
