We really like Green River Lake State Park. In you area, we have been to Carr Creek SP and Trace Branch COE? Paintsville Lake SP has a few sites on the water.

This is also a COE campground, not part of LBL.

There are some sights at Piney Campground in LBL right on the water, but not a lot of them, and they will book up fast.

These are some nice COE campgrounds on Dale Hollow, in northern TN. Right on the water.

to find more COE sites on lakes.

COE makes it difficult for any other public agency or private business to build on land they control. Therefore the nicer lakeside spots are likely to be in COE campgrounds.

I've searched it out and just found 3 campgrounds there. All the waterside spots are booked through August. 3 or 4 outside the area are the same way. I'm finding a lot of the campgrounds don't post an actual campground map which I think they should. When your a day's driving away I want a general idea of the spot I'm getting ya know? There's plenty of lakes in KY & TN I've found but I'd love to find a spot literally right next to the water. Most are general campgrounds down from the water.

Does `pretty well booked' mean totally booked or just the sites next to the lake are taken?

You could do a Google search for `Kentucky Lake camping' and/or `Lake Barkley camping' and see the choices.
