Sunset Beasch resort VA?

Thanks for the response, it sounds like sunset beach is similar to how castaways was in the beginning. BTW, we like castaways and don't mind their little beach,

I wasn't looking for shade or trees I have and awning, we live in New England and camp in the forest a lot, this is a beach trip for the wife and I to relax at.

Well I can comment on what was here before like Bucky has. He obviously doesn't like the changes. I can tell you I'm hear right now. I like the place. I have a 34 foot pull along rv and a crew cab long bed truck that fits fine in front of my camper. The width of the sites isn't bad, the back to back is pretty close. But it's nothing different than what I've experienced in the other beach resort campgrounds I've been to. It's small and quiet. On Sunday the beach was busy but after that pretty empty. Maybe a dozen people on the beach yesterday when I was there. I haven't seen any jelly fish the bay at all. Correct there is no shade, but then again I've been to outer banks and myrtle beach and had no shade there either. They have a beach area and we've been hanging out at it and swimming in the bay. Dogs are allowed in the dog area of the beach. The pool is nice and it's open until 10pm. There is a bar, eatery on the deck at the bay. That is nice too and the food is fine. Plenty of space to relax. Eastern shore wildlife refuge is across the street if you want to do some hiking or if you have kayaks, I've been launching at their kayak launch and fishing. I also went on a party boat fishing trip on the miss jennifer about 10 minutes north of here at Cherrystone. Kiptopeke state park is next door if you want to check that out. I'm headed there tomorrow for some kayak fishing and crabbing. I'm here with 5 families and we are having a good time and would not hesitate to come back. We are enjoying the relaxing. There is also a kayak rental company out in front of the hotel. They do rentals and kayak tours. Not sure what else I can say. Place is pretty clean. The kids are having fun. Yesterday drove out onto the bridge for lunch and last night drove into Va Beach for some lunch. Didn't go to any of the attractions there though. One small town nearby here. Cape Charles. It has a block or two of little shops, ice cream shop, etc...

thanks for all the info, it is looking like the power might be restored this weekend at cape hatteras. if so we will remain with our original plans, however I will keep this info in mind for the future...maybe a trip to VA beach might be in the future.

You could go a little futher north on the DelMarVa to Chincoteague, Assateague or Bethany Beach MD. Delaware Beach State Park is right in the water.

In Virginia Beach, the Holiday Travel Park has awesome super sites. Been there three times, easy bike ride to the beach, plenty to do in the campground and around the area.

thanks for all the info, after reading more I have decided to skip sunset beach resort and look into VA beach area. Too bad there is nothing else around that offers direct beach access like the cape hatteras area.

That was once a beautiful piece of property. No longer.
The motel has been there since I can remember but had seen it's better days and went on the market. They did realize about 6 years ago or so that the seasonal sites might keep them afloat. You would really have to see pics of before and after to realize just how bad it was gutted when new ownership took over. The seasonals were all new units with nice people from the Chippokes/Williamsburg area that all seemed to be friends before coming over. Bigger sites with plenty of boat and golf cart parking. Google Earth will still have pics of before should you want to look. Heck, they even invited us over one weekend to join their pig picking. DJ and the whole bit, it was great.
Then the prior owners added 3 rows of nightly sites and that helped for a while. Then they got an offer that they couldn't refuse and sold out.
The first thing the new owners did was level the entire open area behind the motel. The idyllic meadow GONE, Crepe Myrtles GONE, reasonable prices GONE, free access to the restaurant and beach even if you were staying elsewhere GONE, and boaters came from all over Hampton Roads to anchor out and spend money at the restaurant. That may be ongoing as we haven't been back. The sites are right on top of each other, there is very little parking for a toad or a crew cab pick up, sorry it's just a mess. And that is before it rains.
It's a long way to almost anywhere from there but as we always went with friends and family it didn't matter. We knew all the local places and always had a blast. Cape Charles is a good local town to visit, 10 miles north of the bridge tunnel. Several decent restaurants, great beach, and a nationally acclaimed ice cream shop.
I would check out Kiptopeke State Park if I were you, FHUs and about $50 a night for out of state. Dog beach and a human beach, trails, woods, and pretty big sites. It's 3 miles north of the Sunset RV site.

As I mentioned we are waiting a little before bailing on the koa in Cape Hatteras, really hope they reopen soon. Another option my wife has been looking at is VA beach as we have never been there.

Just stayed there. It's basically a big parking lot with RV sites. I do believe all are FHU. No shade to speak of. There is one side with trees on the edge that will SLIGHTLY shade the back of your coach. We had to put 2 supports under our jacks and re-level as our jacks were sinking. The first part when you enter looked like all permanents and had kind of a tenement city look. The rest of it was vacationers. There's a pool and restaurant/bar with nice views as someone stated. The food was pretty good. The beach is small as both sides are posted as a wildlife refuge so no one is allowed to enter...so no walking the beach. But there is a small beach, nonetheless. We only went down there once, so can't comment on the quality of the beach. It wasn't for us, but we went thinking there was more to do in the area such as quaint towns, marinas, etc. If you like the water, pool, restaurant/bar, then you'll probably like it. Funny...we were going to come home to FL from Williamsburg via the Outer Banks, but for some reason, I got the idea to go to Cape Charles & area. Wish we'd have gone to the Outer Banks.

They completely did the campground in the past year or so. I have never stayed there but drove past a few times.
