We go once a year and have stayed at many of the campgrounds, but our favorite is Pine Mountain in Pigeon Forge. It is a newer campground, probably 6-7 yrs old, so trees in the pull-thru sites are not huge and offer a small amount of shade. The ones by the creek are shaded for part of the day.
It is at traffic light #6, Dollywood turn-off is at 8 or 9. The last one in PF is 10. It's off the parkway, but only a block and a half, but behind a knoll so you don't get all the parkway traffic noise.
River Plantation is nice, but it is in Sevierville, so you are a long ways from Gatlinburg and the traffic through Pigeon FOrge can be AWFUL!! A 10 mile trip can take hours.
You can stay in Townsend, Cosby, or one of the other outlying areas, but then you have to drive in for all the amenities in Gatlinburg or PF.
Trolleys run through most of the campgrounds IN Pigeon Forge and you can ride to the visitor center and catch another trolley to Gatlinburg.
There is just so much to do that you will NOT get bored. Shopping, shows, amusement rides, mountains, hiking, wildlife, etc. are all located within an hours drive.
Have fun.
