x2 on Aune Osborn! We camped there in a 34'TT so we know they have sites you'll fit in. Loved watching the freighters go by - RIGHT BY the campground, close enough you can almost touch them! (Correct spelling of the town: Sault Ste Marie. Still pronounced "Soo Saint Marie.")
I'd recommend the boat tour through the Soo Locks, and there's a retired Lakes freighter in town that's been turned into a museum. Worth the visit.
State parks are likely to be full on weekends, but you may find a stray open site or two during the week.
Don't miss Mackinac Island (correct spelling, pronunciation the same as for Mackinaw)! Camp on either the UP or the lower peninsula (why isn't it called the LP?) and take the ferry to the island for a day trip. Be aware that crossing the bridge over the Straits of Mackinac may be restricted for higher vehicles if it's windy.
and if the OP is in the Mackinaw area over Labor Day they may want to 'walk the bridge'. each Labor Day two of the four lanes on the bridge are closed to vehicular traffic and opened to pedestrians. I participated in that walk a few years back and had a ball!
