I am planning a trip that, in part, will take me from Moab north to the Utah/Idaho border. We have never camped in the central to northern Utah area and are hoping to do it in the late Spring 2014. We love campgrounds more than RV parks with the space and beauty that campgrounds give that RV parks give up. As we head North to Idaho towards SLC and northward we have no problem going 100-200 miles off of the Interstate to appreciate and experience Utah's State and County campgrounds.So, we are looking for your favorites and with two last provisos: We will want to be there in the late May/early June period and these parks at the higher elevation need to be open and we have a Class A 32 foot with a toad. Space is an issue as well as the roads in.Thanks for the help

This site will give you a pretty inclusive accounting of Fed/State/City&County parks. Note the legend at the bottom of the map and go from there. The campgrounds show up like pins on the map and the right hand column lists the CGs that are visible. Clicking on a park in the column will lead to a website for further info.

There are plenty of places to camp in UT, both public and private

Three of my favorites when I was living in the Ogden area were:Willard Bay State Park (nice well kept can get windy in the evenings close to I-15)Antelope Island State Park (The buffalo can and sometimes will wander thru the campsites...pretty neat-o I thought)Monte Cristo Utah (Sits at 9000 feet beautiful spot way up high in the Wasatch...might be open when you get up that way)Of course there's lots of camping around Pineview reservoir and on up toward Magpie which is on the way to Monte Cristo.Loved this area when growing up back there.I think you might like these places too.Have fun!

All the way up to SLC and beyond there are some very nice State Parks with varying levels of service. Some are on the interstate and do have some road noise, some are a ways off the main highway and offer very relaxing sites. Here's the site: Utah State Parks. Enjoy the trip!

Very small campground but nice at Cedar Breaks Nat'l Monument. Just north of Zion a ways. Elevation around 10,000 ft. Kind of a mini-Bryce Canyon feature.

There have been many good suggestions all ready. Strawberry Res. Is a nother good spot. Yuba and Willard are two of my favorites for spring time. Up high can be trickey just depends on the winter we get. Anything over the Mirror Lake Highway is just breathtaking but that is soley dependant on snow. This year it was open very early, a few years ago they were trying to plow the road open in July.

The biting gnats at Antelope Island can be really nasty. They begin hatching in the spring around May, but by the end of June/begining of July they have mostly died off.

Early spring and fall are the best times for camping. There's little shade on the island so the midsummer sun and heat can be oppressive.

We liked/hated Antelope Island!
Likes: The wildlife was great, it was quiet & the views were amazing! Climb up to the peak to see nearly the entire Great Salt Lake. We drove down to the other end to see the original buildings for the farm & had a stare-down with a huge bison on the way back!

Dislikes: The gnats (?) were bad at times, the sites don't have power (& it was hot when we were there late June) & the water/shore-line was downright nasty! I waded out the feel the buoyancy but the flies right at the edge deterred my wife.

We spent a week at Dinosaur National monument in this May. The main campground should be open in May, and there are sites that are OK at 32'.

From Vernal UT north are a more than a handful of state park and national forest campgrounds.

2 years ago we camped at Bear Lake in Garden City . We liked the campground a lot. We went for a drive to Logan and the scenery going up the mountain was beautiful. The view of the lake from up high is just magnificent. Check Utah state parks for more information

I just thot of something.

If you happen to be heading North on I-15 and have time of course.
You may get a kick out of Smith and Edwards.
It's an old surplus\farm supply all inclusive place to buy just about anything.

I used to go out there to get horse tack, work clothes, fishing tackle, camp cooking supplies...ammo...on and on.
Got my dutch oven and propane burner stand there.

This place has it all and it's right off the freeway headed toward Willard and Brigham City.
Might be a good small diversion for the trip...
