Virginia Camping in January

Any suggestions for areas, campgrounds and attractions to visit in VA in January?
We like natural, historical and outdoor attractions.

Parkview Park in Appomattox is just up the road from Appomattox Historical park and surrender grounds

Since you mentioned "historical" do be sure to take in Colonial Williamsburg in the winter, particularly before Jan. 1 while they are still putting on the special programming for the holidays. The programs and the way the area is lit up at night is positively fantastic. MUCH less crowded than during the summer. Enjoy & safe travels.

Chippokes Plantation State Park near Surrey, VA -- just a ferry ride across the James River from Jamestown Settlement. Pocahontas State Park near Chesterfield, VA -- short drive to Henricus Historic Park (2nd English settlement in what is now the US). Twin Lakes State Park near Farmville, VA -- short drive to Sailor's Creek Battlefield State Park. James River State Park, Gladstone, VA -- half hour north of Appomattox Courthouse National Historic Park. These are just a few of the lowland State Parks in VA, you may need to fill your fresh water tank as site spigots will be off at some of these. Plenty more to see at VA State Parks - Find a Park

Depending on when in Jan you are coming, you could find the weather not too bad. Of course, you could also find yourself stuck in 4' of snow. Early Jan can be not too cold, but temps will go freezing overnight at a minimum. Feb has been our coldest months the past few years. I would stay out of the mountainous regions and look more towards the coastal areas...like Williamsburg perhaps. Regardless, Va is not somewhere people typically go in the winter. I know we don't plan to be here from Jan-Mar next year.

We do see some low temps here but they have been short lived over the past few years. Who knows what to expect now with the ever changing climate changes.

Have tent camped and POPUP trailer camped along the Blue Ridge Parkway and in the SKYLINE Drive areas during the winter months. Does get pretty chilly at nights in the higher elevations. Alot of places here do close for the winter months so beware of that when expecting to find something open. Plan ahead...

Without extended cold spells I get away with blow-out winterizing here where we live in the northern neck areas close to the Potomac River.

Both I95 and I81 have good camp grounds along the way. Probably I81 has the better of them being more closely associated with the higher elevations here.

Where ever you go in VA in January, bring your heavy duty long underwear along. We saw -4 deg. F temps at Ft Chiswell near the end of last January on our way to Florida.
