Walmart 'originally' offered their parking lots to RV'ers for emergency purposes. Inclement or unsafe weather conditions on the road, breakdown, etc. A safe place to pull a big rig off the road, temporarily.
Responsible RV'ers used it for just that when NECESSARY.
It was the onset of RV'ers that choose to use it as a camping 'destination' to avoid CG fees.........is what has prompted many Walmarts to ban overnight parking.
THEY and they alone are to blame for complete overnight bans at most of Walmarts across the country. Thanks. 😞
The few that have banned overnights have done so with pressure from the local campground owners...maybe even a campground owner on the city council. This, IMNSHO, is the reason for the few and far between WalMarts banning overnight stays.

We have been rv'n for 23 yrs and have never stayed at a wal mart or any other parking lot. We're certainly not rich. But figure if we can afford a rv we can afford to stay in an rv park. Besides who wants to be rousted out in the middle of the night and forced to move..No parking lots for us.

I guess you would have to call us "Equal Opportunity Avoiders". I use the previously cited reference of all the free overnight parking and where the Walmart file has a Circle/Strike, we avoid that town. If Bill has it labeled as NOP, we don't need anything there. We will go where we are wanted.
The only time we ever left a lot where we had expected to stay the night was at a casino. We had settled in where the trucks and RVs were when one of the trucks fired up a very loud reefer. We moved to another part of the lot. Before we could do anything, a Renta Cop banged on the door and said we had to be over by the load reefer. I said "No We don't and tell them to cancel our dinner reservation too." We moved down the road to a Walmart. We were actually getting ready to go into the lounge (I don't gamble), so we got a bottle of wine and a pizza.

We've stayed at several Wal-Marts along the I-95 corridor. If there are other RVs or trucks parked, we don't bother asking. If there isn't anyone else, we usually try to track down security. If we don't see security, we'll go in and ask. We've called ahead a few times. Our last trip to NJ we called the Wal-Mart in Ownings Mills, MD to check if we could stay and the manager said the lot was too small (never saw a small parking lot at a Wal-Mart before). So we called the Wal-Mart in White Marsh and the manager said no problem, just park in the back.
We usually try not to bother the manager unless the Customer Service Associate doesn't know. The manager definitely has better things to do than be bothered with whether or not an RVer can park in the lot. Sometimes we shop in the Wal-Mart, other times we don't.
