We've stayed at several Wal-Marts along the I-95 corridor. If there are other RVs or trucks parked, we don't bother asking. If there isn't anyone else, we usually try to track down security. If we don't see security, we'll go in and ask. We've called ahead a few times. Our last trip to NJ we called the Wal-Mart in Ownings Mills, MD to check if we could stay and the manager said the lot was too small (never saw a small parking lot at a Wal-Mart before). So we called the Wal-Mart in White Marsh and the manager said no problem, just park in the back.

We usually try not to bother the manager unless the Customer Service Associate doesn't know. The manager definitely has better things to do than be bothered with whether or not an RVer can park in the lot. Sometimes we shop in the Wal-Mart, other times we don't.

The manager is the one who piles the corn and water melons the highest. He trys to make coke cartons go to the sky but they are taking that away now and putting him over candy on the floor isle the month. Next comes Easter Cards and lots of colored eggs to worry about.
Mocking the managers at Walmart is a great idea. I am sure when they have their regional and national meetings they will let the other managers know that if you don't allow RVs, the RVers will take to the internet to make fun of you. That will surely make the others fearful of taking similar action. Maybe a letter writing campaign to Corporate in Arkansas (it really is a company of simpletons, proof is they headquarter in Arkansas) telling them how the RV community knows how stupid their store managers are will force them to open up more parking lots to camping.
I was on the road in the 60's when a manager was a manager who ran the store, not one who gets his orders the night before, and puts out the red can of beans in isle number 11 5 ft. high, and than runs to isle 4 to put up the potato's , then pass out the checks on Friday night, nothing wrong with hard working (70 hr. or so to make a living. He may have to move his family 1200 miles in a monent. For these gaints. He should be called a salve not manager, All this so you can save 7 cents on a loaf of bread. And sleep in there front yard. hello.
So big a world, so little time to see.

Walmart 'originally' offered their parking lots to RV'ers for emergency purposes. Inclement or unsafe weather conditions on the road, breakdown, etc. A safe place to pull a big rig off the road, temporarily.

Responsible RV'ers used it for just that when NECESSARY.

It was the onset of RV'ers that choose to use it as a camping 'destination' to avoid CG fees.........is what has prompted many Walmarts to ban overnight parking.

THEY and they alone are to blame for complete overnight bans at most of Walmarts across the country. Thanks. 😞

"Dare ya to pull into the walmart down in Marathon for the night."

There's a Walmart in Marathon? We spent a whole week down there in July and I never noticed it. But I concede that if any Walmart in Florida bans overnight parking that would be the one. I'm not claiming that all Walmart in Florida allow overnight parking, probably a lot of them near the coast in high tourist population areas do not. Plus the Orlando area probably does not.

I have pulled into many Walmarts (and a number of other supermarkets), fifth wheel in tow, across the country to go shopping while we are traveling. And I have never ever been met with the cops and/or the store management telling us we can't park there. And that includes a number of Florida stores. I don't recall stopping in Brooksville tho. I would have complained to Walmart about that sort of treatment. We always park on the edge of parking lots for the simple reason that it's hard to maneuver the long rig around parking lots.

We have been rv'n for 23 yrs and have never stayed at a wal mart or any other parking lot. We're certainly not rich. But figure if we can afford a rv we can afford to stay in an rv park. Besides who wants to be rousted out in the middle of the night and forced to move..No parking lots for us.
That sounds like a safe way to do it too. I've been RVing for 30 years and have always stayed at Walmarts, or any other strip shopping center lot that I can when travelling, including when in the whole state of Florida. Pompano Beach, Sarasota, Ft. Meyers, Gainesville/Ocalla, Tallahassee, and Pensacola. I spent over a week at a Walmart right across from Universal Studios amusement park, and never had a bit of trouble while enjoying the sights around Orlando, FL. Several days and nights were spent at a Marriot Courtyard Inn's parking lot too, so I could more easily catch the shuttles to the attractions. I've never had a problem once I pull the drapes and turn-in for the night. I love to travel where it's convenient to be located when travelling too.

We used Walmart once in Texas when we ran way behind schedule on a travel day. We were supposed to stay at a COE CG but at 9 PM were still 20-30 miles away from it, on secondary roads too. The gate would have been locked too.

So we stopped at a Walmart parking lot. It was hot and noisy so I can't say we enjoyed our stay. But it was better than the alternative. We tried to find a commercial CG close by but could not. So I'm glad that they are available if something like that happens again. But I would not plan to stay in one.

Respectively have to disagree with you that ALL accept over night RV parking. Don't know what 'area' in Florida you are RV'ing in but not ALL of them allow overnight parking. In fact in my travels as a full timer Florida has the most Walmarts that do not allow overnight parking.

Central Florida. I've found that just pull into any parking lot with an RV and the police are right there during Snowbird season.

Walmart outside of Brooksville,Fl off I-75.
I pulled in to a Wallmart at 9:00 in the morning that had a sign 'no over night parking' JUST GO GROCERY SHOPPING.

I was met by the local police and the Walmart rent a cop.......said I could not park there.

I explained I was just going into to buy groceries, NOT to park overnight. Nope they said I had to leave. I asked if that meant they were refusing me to SHOP at Walmart? Their answer? Go home and get your car and come back!!!:S

I asked if they were blind and could not see my plates were from Wisconsin and 3,500 miles was a bit of a long drive back and get my car to be able to shop at their @%$# store........I almost got arrested for saying that to the cop.:R
