My wife and I will be traveling to Alaska to retire after my time in the Army in Jan. We will be visiting my Dad in Mineral Wells TX before we go towards CA then up the coast then on to Alaska to Anchorage. I was thinking of stopping at Fort Davis on the way from El Paso to Mineral Wells any one have any other suggestions for any other places to stay on the way to Mineral Wells? We could do the drive in one day however I I would like to enjoy the trip and we have a small zoo of dogs and parrots.

Indeed, thank you for your service!

Double ditto on Balmorhea SP.

You also might consider going south to San Angelo. There is a KOA there and San Angelo State Park. Check the reviews on www.rvparkreviews.com.
If you want to head north near Amarillo is Palo Duro Canyon. Awesome!
As retired military, you are entitled to camp in military famcamps. www.militarycampgrounds.us is the reference for that.
Near Weatherford TX we like Oak Creek RV Park right off I-20.
