Yellowstone Mammoth CG in Mid October

I understand that this CG is open year around. Has anyone here camped at Mammoth mid October and if so, what's the availability of sites here and the weather? We're thinking of first traveling to SW Montana then on over to Mammoth via Gardiner. We are self contained with solar panels and a catalytic heater so cool/cold fall weather is not an issue, but it's nice to know in advance what to expect. Thanks.

Bussskipper, thanks for the feedback on the weather. I really appreciate it. That's that kind of weather I was thinking, one just never knows.

Keep in mind it was mild the time I mentioned - BUT - it had already snowed two or three times and those snows can come anytime - or not till November just stay Flexible and I think you will love the time you are there.

Yellowstone looks great in White :B

Best of Luck - share some images when you finish, and tell your story:)

Another question for those of you who have stayed at Mammoth. Since we have a FW, moving from another campsite to snag and site with the chance of not getting one is disappointing, so . . . do they allow you to drive in with just your TV, pay for a site, then return with your RV? We've done this a couple of times for Baker's Hole FS CG in West Yellowstone, staying at Grizzly, driving over to Baker's Hole, paying for a site, then returning with our RV. Thanks.

We have stayed in Madison, CG in Late October early November Indian Summer after a couple snows - Mid 20's for lows and 69 for highs - Best trip Ever!!!

More animals than People - as that was a few years ago it appears that the Season has extended every year and that more and more people are there later till the road is closed - As is normally the case - Tetons are Great and the Northern part of the park tends to have milder weather - Cody is still open and the WalMart is good to resupply as most everything is sold out or 2X$ or more.

Sounds like a great trip - Pictures and a quick report will be appreciated at the End.

Best of Luck,

if you hear a strange noise behind you it is them rolling up the sidewalks and getting the snowmobiles warmed up. winter comes early in the high country

Yes, I've seen this frozen cord image. We generally take our road trips in mid to late September in the Rocky Mountains so we are used to the cool days and cold nights, but mid October is a new one for us. I'll have to watch the weather forecast.

I have always been able to find a spot in Sept but there can be snow anytime after Labor Day. Towing a rig in 12 inches of snow is not good. You can wait a day or two or bring chains. Putting chains on the rear wheels of your TV helps but I don't like towing in the snow.

Thank you! I'll keep an eye out on the forecast.

Jayco-noslide - thank you for the feedback. We can handle fall weather - mid to upper 50's to low 20's if we have some sunny days. Sometimes here in Idaho we have a full month of October that's sunny, but cold at night and we camp in it. Yes, we know there are no hook-ups. I checked both Campendium and campsitephotos.com and noted that quite a few sites can handle longer lengths. Someone there noted that the hosts or rangers are good at assigning sites based on your length. Is that so? How early do we need to arrive to be assured of a good site for us? Thanks!

Be aware of site lengths for your fairly long 5th wheel.

Great campground. No doubt you know there's no hook-ups. But nice sites, bathrooms, etc. Oct. is getting a little borderline if you like it summery but probably would be a great time most years. A few things in the Park may be closing. Altitude there is less than most of the interior. In years past we've always got a site even in busy season by getting there mid- morning but we've learned to not take that for granted any more anywhere or time. I don't think you can reserve Mammoth. We worked at the Mammoth store 3 summers.
