Yellowstone National Park, Buffalo Jams

This is our 6th day in Yellowstone. We go out exploring every day. So far no Bear Jams but seems like you can't drive down the road with out encountering the Buffalo wanting to cross the road.

May visitation in Yellowstone is up 15 percent over May of 2015. Can't wait to see the numbers for June. This is the most we have seen this early in June. Lots of time there is no available parking at the attractions. Tour buses every where.

This is a Buffalo Jam crossing the Nez Perce and road.

At the same time we were in Bison Jams, there was a serious Elk Jam right in Mammoth. They came though the middle of the town and the rangers were running like crazy ants warning stupid people to stay away from them and putting out little yellow signs like might be for a wet floor in the mall, but these said,"Wild Animals - Do Not Approach". There was a bull there with a rack that could have been a christmas tree.

The three of us went back to the coach and watched though the windshield.

The elk took their time and wandered south towards the hot springs.

A sailor, his bride and their black dogs (one dear dog is waiting for us at the bridge) going to see some dry places that have Geocaches in a coach made the year we married.

In Estes Park we called them Elk Jams - up in Rocky Mtn NP or just anyplace in town.

Same thing - different animal.

Am digressing now...........

ORbiker sounds like the some of the bikers who feel they can go between lines of cars, moving or still, by driving up in between them - not only dangerous and inconsiderate but probably against the law. I once was going down an interstate that was backed up for an accident but the two lanes were moving maybe 20 mph. Biker roaring up between the 2 lanes and two truckers closed the gap between them so he could not get thru. He swung back and forth to let them know he wanted to go thru. They just kept it tight and we kept moving. Biker took to the median shoulder and roared past. Laws and common sense to not apply to some people - bikers or otherwise. Our town two weeks ago buried a just turned 18 year old young man who thought that laws did not apply to him.

Take the I's if in a hurry!

Let the rest of us enjoy the park - if you go in late October then it usually just you and the Buffalo. (and the other wildlife)

ORbiker, where did you have to be in such a hurry that you didn't have the time to enjoy what the Parks have to offer? There should be a special place for people who drive as fast as they can to get through a Park so they can say they've "seen" the Park. "Seeing" a Park is not the same as experiencing it. We were in Yellowstone about 2 1/2 years ago in October and ran into three Bison jams in one afternoon. No one was in a hurry to get anywhere and, as far as I can tell, everyone enjoyed seeing a magnificent animal pretty close up.

I shot through the one lane gap and cracked the throttle and they all move away so the the herd of cars could go through.I had a super load air horn for back-up, plus speed.

Careful-that could be construed as harassing the wildlife.

I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be

One time when we were in Yellowstone, the park rangers were on horses moving a big herd from one side of the highway to the other. It was a neat experience watching them round them up. Many times they walked right by our window. They are definitely HUGE.

Maybe it's me but I still don't see a problem. I have a photo from 17 years ago and we were first in line behind a bison for almost 2 hours before he stepped off the road and plopped down in the grass. Just then a ranger in a jeep pulled up next to us and asked how long we were leading the parade. I told him and he laughed and drove in front of us to keep an eye on the traffic behind us. Great trip.

The little one moved to the edge of the road and the bigger ones moved to the edges of the road facing away from the middle. Custer State Park is the other place that has a lot of issues with the buffalo jams. It's both exciting and terrifying to be in the middle of a herd like that.

Last year we got held up for 45 minutes in one Bison jam. The other were less. I'm glad we were in a motorhome with out own bathroom.
