Yellowstone Yak Attack

Yep the yaks have arrived in force...on top of toads, pickups, usually in pairs. I counted 400+ in my round the park this morning. The influx of the retired folks.

Keep in mind your yak is only allowed in Lewis Lake or Yellowstone Lake, and after bring inspected and a permit purchased. Rivers would be fun but off limits...those waterfall things. :)

Drive safely...stopping in the road on curves may end your trip. There are about 400 plus employee vehicles running on schedules, some 18 wheelers, a rear ender would spoil your trip for sure. Remember park regs require all 4 wheels off the road if you are stopping to look at stuff. Be safe...mid 20's at night the last few nights.

Oh yeah...YAK= kayaks :) :) :)
  • Sounds like a good time to me. We are a four yakfamily and if I could haulmore I would. LOL
  • I though you meant four-legged yaks...not paddle yaks.

    Too funny!!!!

    Thanks, I needed that. :)
  • Wish we were there right now with our pair of yaks. What beautiful paddling that would be!
  • For a minute there, I thought someone needed to buy a large mammal identification book :)
  • Yup! As a midwestern hick, I had no idea what a yak was/is. Thanks for the explanation. Gotta love acronyms.

So did I. At first I was trying to picture Yaks on top of cars and trucks. Guess I have not heard them abbreviated down to Yaks before

Hope you enjoy your trip! We have only been to Yellowstone once back in 2005 and it was incredible. We are hoping to make it back within the next 2 years with our kids. Regarding Kayaking, we are recreational kayakers and have some 10' boats that we use for day trips, bass fishing, etc. My 7 yr daughters now have their own as well. We recently got them the Old Town Herron Jr's which are a great kids boat. Lots of fun watching them! Anyway, are there places in Yellowstone ok for "recreational kayaking"? Everything I see shows people doing full day and multi day trips on ocean style kayaks? Any places in the park that can be safely paddled within a few hours for smaller rec boats, with great scenery etc? Thanks!
  • Only paddling is in the lakes...no rivers allowed. Both lakes are cold...high 40's max in summer, and colder. Big afternoon winds make safety a real issue. Close to shore and not too far, with a buddy for help, or with an outfitter group.

People have died from exposure in incidents. I love the park but yaks are better in the Keys for me. JMHO.
