Big Guy, Small Bathroom

Just returned from another great weekend in the new travel trailer. 4 weekends in a row! My only real complaint is the bathroom being so cramped. When it's just me and my wife, she'll gladly step outside and give me the pleasure of mounting the throne with the bathroom door opened as long as I run the vent fan. With our little girl, it's a little much to ask to run outside when it's cold out or at 2am when she could walk in on me......If I had 6" more, OMG! There's no other "nice" way to put it, you have to be a contortionist to wipe with the door closed!

Has anyone ever expanded their facilities? I have a buddy who is a professional contractor and carpenter. I'm thinking of having him check out the travel trailer bathroom and expanding the door frame 6" outward. That is all that I need. No moving walls or tearing out the tub/shower. Just having the frame "Deepened" about 6" would make all of the difference in the world. Add some trim to take up the excess door frame outside of the bathroom to give it somewhat of a finished look.......no more strained muscles!

When on the search for a 5er one thing we checked on every one was the distance from front of the throne to the wall in front of it. Actually took a tape measure with us to the RVs or dealers lots.

Neither one of us is overweight but there is a certain amount of room required. I guess RV designers don't do what the rest of us do.

Wow! Nice work. My carpenter welcomed a new grandaughter into the world this weekend. He's coming over after Thanksgiving to check things out. My wife loves the idea of the swing out panel that allows the door to remain open farther. We measured that out this weekend and can get a full 9" of extra space. We'll make the final decision shortly. Thank you all so much.

This should be easy and cheap for you to do, or have your friend do.

Could the toilet just be rotated 90 degrees to give more leg room?

Not sure that flange would work. I'll run that by my carpenter. I like the idea of reducing the cabinet size and angling it to give more knee room. I am going to seriously look at the addition of a fold away door spacer suggested earlier. That sounds like an idea that I am 100% capable of tackling. Several good options posted here and honestly, the wife hates the accordion door idea. I've been vetoed on that for the bathroom. Lol. Still considering the accordion door to use in place of the curtain separating the bedroom and kitchen.

There are offset toilet flanges available at HD, Lowes, etc that will permit one to slightly move the toilet (a few inches) if it would allow more room/access. Would something like that be helpful?

That's what I was thinking. That cabinet is taking up a lot of space and could get cut down. You could leave the sink as is and angle the base in towards the wall. Gives you more knee room.

Thank you.

Add a piece of plywood 10" wide by the height of the door to the knob end of the door with hinges. When you need the room and privacy flip the 10" plywood out 90 degrees from the door giving you and extra wedge of room. When done fold the plywood flat against the door and close it as usual. You would have to move the stop on the door jam in 1/2" to compensate for the 1/2" plywood but it would be less work than rebuilding the wall.

A carpenter could do a nice job and make it look nice. A couple of good magnets on the 1/2" plywood and in the door jam could keep the door closed with the plywood out. Or maybe just use a hook.

That bathroom is HUGE. We have a wet-bath truck camper and, for me, it's easier to partially dis-robe before entering the bathroom. I know that doesn't alleviate your problem proof-reading and such, but even a semi-competent carpenter shouldn't have any problem putting an extension jamb in your door way. Possibly, using the existing holes for the hinges and striker to support the new structure, preventing/limiting the addition of holes to the existing jamb. I would pursue that before an accordion door. Although it's very seldom used, we have an accordion door in our S&B that irritates me, (but not enough irritation to move a new door to the top of my Honey-do list).
