LP tank ratings

I see an idea for replacing Horizontal LP tank. NOt the permanently installed fixed tank. The removable horizontal tank like this.

https://www.propanetankstore.com/20-lbs-5-gallon-manchester-horizontal-propane-tank-with-gauge/?gclid=Cj0KCQjw-o_bBRCOARIsAM5NbIN_YiNWpehTaYCf0ldOWq560E5z8_Zlryzyb_pqHtQTh1ChqMrGRMUaAjeTEALw_wcB

The LP compartment was modified to hold a standard upright LP tank.

Before I purse this I would like to know if the tanks for RV's are different in some way that a standard Bar B que tank? I see tanks on the front of travel trailers, are they rated differently?

I know for 100% sure that the horizontal tanks do not need an opd valve nor do they need to be recertified. I have only had an issue one time while traveling at a Camping World getting a tank filled....

There are vertical DOT cylinders and horizontal DOT cylinders plus ASME tanks. The bottle linked earlier is clearly indicated as a DOT cylinder. It must be vertical for filling and horizontal for use.

If having an issue make a copy of this on sticker paper and attach to tank.

Finding the difference between tanks ASME and DOT is not so easy to pin down.

edit: I followed the directions on how to post a pic and nothing??

You are adding an additional img statement at each end of the URL because you are pasting the URL into the forum image posting box instead of pasting it directly into your post. When you use the app just copy the URL and paste it directly into your post. Do not make ANY changes-No additions and no subtractions.

My first TT had the same horizontal tanks in your link..

I was caught off guard by the change in regulations that required OPD valves.. As you can see $190 just for ONE tank is stupididly expensive and I had TWO tanks..

Supposedly there was a loophole which would allow for these tanks to still be refilled, could not find any place that would honer that loophole..

There is another loophole which is for cutting torch useage, but once again could not convince any supplier to fill them.

Could not find any propane supplier that was willing to touch those tanks for OPD conversion.

For the price of a tank mounting kit and two new vertical tanks I ditched the horizontal tanks for $80..

If I ever see another RV outfitted with horizontal tanks I will not just walk, but RUN as fast as I can away from the deal..
  • No. there's no difference between RV 5 gallon/20# tanks and those used on BBQ's or available for exchange everywhere.
