Replacement Euro Recliners for RV - a case study

I have found some threads on replacing chairs, but not all the data I wanted. So I will share my experience for those that may need the same in the future.

We wanted to upgrade our Euro style recliners as the OEM ones were too low and angled to where they were difficult to get out of plus they were starting to tear. We started looking at retail stores but only found a couple of choices in the Euro designs, but we were able to discover our likes/dislikes. What we wanted was leather, > 15โ€ chair height, not highly angled, and a flat or slightly angled ottoman. We also know that we wanted to stay well under $1k per chair.

With retail out, we headed to the Internet and found that Palliser had good quality and a good reputation, with a decent warranty. Based on forum feedback we looked at Brandon Hall (www.braddandhall.com) and Discount Leather Chairs (DLC) (www.discountleatherchair.com). BH offered a selection of pre-built chairs but they were bonded leather and limited colors so we chose DLC which offered all custom chairs including leather and fabric. Shopping for a large item like this on-line can be intimidating and DLC does have re-stocking fees if you make a bad choice. Needless to say we spent a lot of time researching Palliser and many styles they had. We settled on about 5 styles we liked and fit our rigid depth requirements (so the slides can pull in). We then spent a lot of time on the phone with Bob at DLC talking about our needs and he had some great feedback. A couple of things: only trust the Palliser PDFs for dimensions, as retail web sites were all over the map for sizing. Bob also told us to go with the Series 1000 leather as it would hold up better against our Dog and RV life. He also narrowed us down to our final choice, the Insignia, which he felt would be the most comfortable and fit our dimension criteria.

We then pulled the Trigger. DLC quotes order time of 4-6 weeks and ours came in at 4. DLC does not charge you until the chairs are ready to ship, they only authorize the charge (in my case they accidentally put the auhorization through as a charge, but quickly reversed it when I told them). I pinged them a week before the quoted ship date and they told me the chairs were done and they were waiting for Palliser to send them the tracking number. While they were looking for the tracking number, Fed-Ex Ground showed up at my door. DLC says that Palliser has been slow getting tracking numbers out lately.

The boxes were a bit battle-torn. Palliser is a Canadian company, chairs are Hecho in Mexico, and shipped to the US. I made Fed-Ex Ground note the box damage, called Bob at DLC and he assured me that any problems would be dealt with. Turns out contents were fine, but we had a couple of minor manufacturing defects including one of the chair backs that was poorly made (the same crew built both on the same day according to the quality control sticker). Bob at DLC was quick to order us a replacement (Palliser did not want any parts back) which arrived in about 2 weeks (interesting that the replacement back was made in Canada).

If you are not into Ikea type construction, this is not the path for you as you have to build the base, attach the seat, then the back, then the leather arms. Instructions were the typical all pictures no data, but we muddled through and are now expert chair builders. The chairs are all metal framed, with a wood base and wood trim on the arms, they are well constructed and the leather has steel access zippers. They look nice and are a great upgrade to our RV.

We did a 2 week trip with them and they lived up to expectations, except they are way too comfortable for our own good! ๐Ÿ™‚ If we had to do it over again, my wife would choose a model with a slightly lower seat height (she calls it Edith Ann Legs). All in all, a quality chair, at a great price. DLC was very responsive, helpful in the decision making process, and took care of our issues quickly so I would highly recommend DLC for an internet order chair.

We went to Lazy Boy and bought a rocking recliner just like we have in our stick house, (different color). I really love it. Not to rain on anyone's parade, but the footrest is attached.

X2!

We have a nearly new LazyBoy rocking recliner screwed to the swivel base removed from our original RV swivel/rocker/recliner which works well for us.

Can't see crawling over the footrest of a Euro chair, (besides the two piece Euro chairs take up to much floor space... and they are ugly).

My pumpkin orange LazyBoy is ugly too but for the price,($15 at Good Will), I can live with it.

We bought THIS LA-Z-BOY to replace the old swivel rocker in our Motor Home. One of the best moves we have made. It's comfortable - a little small for my "super sized" frame, but just right for DW, and she loves it! BTW, The backs come off of the La-z-boy recliners, so they are easy to get through the small door. They are easy to put together once inside. The salesman showed us how, and we had them leave it apart when we picked it up.

This looks a lot like the one we bought.I looked into getting a swivel base for it, but they want $170 for it, so I'll just rock along. If I had thought of it when we bought it, we could have bought it that way, I bet.

I pulled the crappy couch/bed out of the 5ver and put in two La-Z-Boy loungers. I don't recall the model, but we originally bought one new about 15 years ago. My wife is only 5'2" and because of that we purchased a smaller chair so her feet could reach the floor. That chair was getting worn and we looked at La-Z-Boy to purchase another for the home, but they don't carry that exact model anymore and purchased one that was close. On Craig's List about that same time I found a used La-Z-Boy in excellent shape for $75 that was a mate to the used one we had at home only the color was dark brown (the old one was light brown). We wished we would have done this a long time ago because the two La-Z-Boys have made sitting in the camper on bad weather days or at night 100% better than the old couch.

Jack&Kay, which La Z Boy did you purchase? We love our La Z Boy furniture at home because the support is great and they are well built. Thanks, Jean

I'm not sure what the model number is, it's just a small recliner rocker that is tan in color. Not the most expensive one. The onle thing I wish it did was swivel. I guess I forgot about that part when we were looking, but I still like the chair. (BTW, sorry it took so long to answer)

We have two Ekornes chairs, one is about 17-18 years old and still looks like new, that's the wife's chair. Mine is about seven years old and still looks new as well. The newer one cost about 1 1/2 times what the older one did. Really love the quality, but the prices are way beyond reasonable now. I'll have to take aloof at the Palliser ones.

We bought our first new Suite in 2006 and asked to switch the recliners for Euro chairs. They didn't last long, so I found an Outlet Store that had discontinued Ekornes. They only had one, but the price was so good, we bought it.

Since then, we've switched almost exclusively to Lazyboy. I need a rocker and found one on sale last year at the Lazyboy store: HarborTown. To get sale price we had to buy the floor model, but luckily it was an okay fabric. That and our Lazyboy leather loveseat (Pinnacle) is all we need for seating.

We found some recliners made by Best. http://www.besthf.com/best/Furniture/ReclinersIMO LazyBoy are over priced. Not to say they aren't good products, since we have 3 pieces of Laz Y Boy furniture in our home living room. But when looking at LB for recliners for the 5'er we found them to be more expensive and have less options as far as size's than Best. IMO it's really how the chair feels when you sit in it. Unless you're full timing then they will all last for years.

Went to LazyBoy yesterday to look at chairs. Here is the go to chair for motorhomes and small spaces per the manager. It is available in all materials, rocker, recliner, wall hugger or glider. It is only about 28" wide and the back comes off.

LazyBoy

They also had the Impulse model which is similar but very contemporary with chrome arms.

I used to have one of those gravity recliners from walmart. It would heat and massage and was like $200. It could turn your back muscles into putty. One of these days I will get one for the rv.

Since the kids are gone, and the family room gets little use anymore, the two rockers in the trailer went into the family room and our ekornes chair and my big leather recliner went into the trailer.

At first DW made all kinds of excuses on why not to move stuff around, but now she admits it was a great idea.

We bought our ekornes chair probably 15 years ago, along with an ekornes leather sofa before the prices went through the roof. Back then the ekornes was in the same price range as lazy boy and similar. Not the case anymore!

While the quality and different sizes are fantastic and the leather is very good and they hold up well, I agree, today they really are expensive even given the quality.

Same here, too expensive for what we would use them for. That is why we ended up with the Palliser Chairs.
