I wouldn't cut the wire on any hardwired installation if at all possible. I would buy a short 3-5 ft length of appropriate wire, unhook shore cord, put new wire onto appropriate lugs, hook to surge guard, hook original wire to surge guard. then could easily convert back to stock condition for sale.

f the surge protector fails, you just unplug it and plug the range cord into the outlet. If you change Rv's , you can take this set up with you.

My PI HW50C plan: Hasn't failed in 11 years so I haven't used the bypass switch. It's now in my second rig and can easily be moved to a third. Being able to see the voltage, amps and faults inside is a plus for me.

The HW50C in my rig cost $0, yup nothing, nada. OK it did cost some bucks in the first rig and within months protected me from 160V and so paid for itself many time over that day alone.

Both of my installations were adjacent to the ATS and did not involve cutting any wires. ie Remove the HW50C and the rig is back to the factory setup.

Get a hardwired Progressive unit. You only have to handle it one time. Once its installed you never have to mess with it again vs. installing a portable each and every trip.

By going to Home Depot, you can buy a 50 amp outlet box and a 50 amp range cord plug and mount the portable surge protector in your electrical compartment. It remains always hooked up for convenience and is secured in your compartment to prevent theft. You disconnect your power cord from the transfer switch and wire the range plug to the transfer switch. You then wire your power cord to the 50 amp outlet box. You then plug your potable surge protector in between these items. You can also secure all these components in your compartment. If the surge protector fails, you just unplug it and plug the range cord into the outlet. If you change Rv's , you can take this set up with you.

The PI hard wired unit with the remote digital display has a bypass switch.

I went the portable route. It's easy to just test the electric before doing anything else. I secure it with a cable & lock to discourage casual five finger hike. But, in over 25 years of camping, we haven't had anything walk.

Mine is hardwired and I like it. One less thing to remember when setting up or breaking camp.
