Well perhaps someone needs to start a 12V "puck" list. No need for an inverter if you can find equipment that runs on 12V. Personally the sound of an inverter makes me think I am in a power control room or something and it irritates me when I hear every speaker in the place whistling at me but then again I guess it depends on the wallet as to how much noise your inverter makes. Still ambient AC is hard to filter out of everything when it is being generated so close. And the noise of a generator, well you'd have to be pretty desperate ;-). Since I tinker with electronics, I go the more energy efficient scheme of powering my router direct from 12V. I understand, however, it is over the top or not worth it for most. Most people can only screw in a light bulb LOL.
Note: I currently don't own a TV because of the waste of a mind the programming available today but I do miss it once in a while when I want to watch a movie, so thus I am now shopping for one.
Warning: When I first started dabbling in all this I fried a Cradle Point router marked with a 12V input, of course that might have something to do with the 83 alternator that has never been removed from the motor :-). I think it sometimes has a little voltage stability problem, or it might be my past the recommended shelf life battery that I use, who knows. So to fix it I just installed an inline regulator, bought a new router and it's been running ever since. Keep it on 24x7 and without the energy loss up-converting via inverter and down-converting it via the adapter, it is no longer an issue. I get a 20% or so energy boost out of the deal as well. No need to really own an inverter except for coffee or microwave and who can afford one that will crank out that ;-).
