17.5" wheels and tires

thinking about replacing my g614's with 17.5" wheels and tires. i have 7000# axels. have had one blowout with the 614's and don't want to worry. where is a good place to buy 17.5" wheels and tires?

I've owned Mobile Suites since 2004 and have never seen or heard of one with anything other than 16" Goodyear G614s (earlier models with 7K axles), 17.5" Michelin XTAs (briefly) or 17.5" Goodyear G114s. If you found one with E-rated Mission tires, I can only surmise that they were installed by a less-than-ethical tire dealer since the tires must meet the minimum requirements shown on the GVWR/GAWR/tire size, load rating and inflation pressure label.

The pre-2007/2008 Goodyear G614 tires had a tread separation problem that affected users of this tire on any number of heavier 5th wheels - the problem was not exclusive to DRV units. Supposedly, the later G614s utilized a different design and/or manufacturing process and have proved to be reliable. After 2 tread separations in 2007 on the early G614s on our 2004 MS, Goodyear replaced all 4 tires, and the replacement G614s gave no problem until 2010 when I replaced them with 17.5" Michelin XTAs for a summer trip across Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. The Michelins were also problem-free up to the time we traded for our current 2014.5 MS in May 2014.

Of course the answer is easy to understand for most of us.

Waiting for my first tire problem since I was 16 years old and going on 74.

Better to be lucky than good maybe.

  • I just ordered mine from trailerriresandwheels in Ohio this AM. Shopped around for 2 weeks, asked lots o questions. Went with Sailun tires, which are made in China. Actual users of these tires are reporting good results. I spoke with Michael, as he was my email contact...almost 2 grand with shipping...ouch..but I just blew my first g614 on 2010 Mobile Suites. EVERYOnE recommended 17.5s. Have a buyer hopefully for my used rims, tires..keep ur 16" spare
  • Same as Rusty above. Scott is a good person to deal with.

    Fresh tires and good pricing.
  • Give Scott a call at TrailerTiresandWheels.com. I bought the 17.5" tires and wheels for our previous 5th wheel from him, and they came in a few days with the tires installed and prebalanced with center caps and lug nuts, making it a simple swap. Very knowledgeable, and excellent service.
