The gear you are in when towing isn't important, what is important is the engine RPM, you want to be in the engine's powerband. If you are running a Cummins you can download their Powerspec software which will tell you the optimal engine RPMs. For my 3500 SRW Cummins 3:42, the optimal powerband when towing my 15,000 pound fiver is 1,600 to 1,800 RPMs. This equates to fifth gear when running 50 to 60 MPH.
