We have ordered our last 3 Ram duallys (2004, 2012, 2015). All arrived in about 6 weeks. That way we get exactly what we want on the truck which always includes a 4:10 rear end.

Pulling the 12,000# Montana I sometimes forget, for a long time, to use tow/haul. I only occasionally lock out 6th gear. Aisin. Go for it.

Most of the Ram 3500 duallies I see on the lot here in Texas are 3.73 trucks. There are some 3.42 trucks (the standard axle ratio - thanks EPA and CAFE standards), but 4.10s are hard to find. I had to drive to Alabama to buy the truck in my signature that I found on an internet search. Normally I have to order them to get the 4.10s.

Thx,guys for the comments,He has backed off that truck, but would it be feasible to change out the gears in the rear ends,if so does anybody got a cost idea,he really likes the truck itself except for the gearing.Thx again.

Probably be better off just to look for a different truck rather than change all the gearing.

Love my 4.10 rear end. Personally I would not get any less than a 3.72, but you have to understand ratios, torque, and load handling further to see my point. The 3.42 will work, but he might be towing in 5th when I tow easily in 6thOD.

Big X2 here also!

I've read were guys have received quotes from dealers and private shops for gear axle ratio changes, if memory serves me correct, the rear axle was around $2,200 and do not remember the front axle cost, that is if he has 4x4.

Search around on the Cummins forum this is where I've seen a few threads discussing axle ratio changes.

That would be full retail for both ends of a 4x4. Remember the diff only then has a one year parts warranty. I believe Dave Smith was going to do cummins12V98 2011 for 1500. Chris

Yes, $1,550.

A great deal but as I have said the truck performed great with the 3.42's towing a combined 29K Just took it easy on grades taking off. Oisin would have cured that small issue!

I have a 2015 RAM SRW with a 3.42 axle that pulls a 14k pound trailer. We pulled through Colorado up the Brekenridge pass at 11500 feet with switchbacks without any problems at all. The only thing noticeable was the engine/transmission temps increasing 10 degrees staying well below the max limit. When not towing we get great mileage. The 3.42 should be fine.

The gear you are in when towing isn't important, what is important is the engine RPM, you want to be in the engine's powerband. If you are running a Cummins you can download their Powerspec software which will tell you the optimal engine RPMs. For my 3500 SRW Cummins 3:42, the optimal powerband when towing my 15,000 pound fiver is 1,600 to 1,800 RPMs. This equates to fifth gear when running 50 to 60 MPH.

YEP......
My 5.9L with 48RE and 4:10 tows my 14K 5vr in 4th (OD) at 1850 RPM (62 mph) 11.5 mpg

Dirtydan, I think that's the Canadian Window sticker whose prices are much higher than a comparable truck for sale here.

Your comment is true of most major cities in Canada.

I don't know how the average income folks do it either.

That's $525K US.

So some can be said of housing in some major US Cities in the Northeast and the West
