But in his (and many others') defense, consider this: he's trying to avoid making a mistake. The Internet has given us the opportunity to do a lot more tire kicking than in the past. Manufacturers show Dry Weight, Dry Pin Weight, GVW, and CCC (or some combination thereof). They don't give loaded weights, not even typical or "for example" numbers. Figuring out even an estimate for wet pin weight, since on many FWs most of the storage space is ahead of the axles, and therefore much of the cargo weight will end up on the pin.
And I don't know any dealers who will let you borrow a FW for a few days so you can load all your stuff in it and take it to a CAT scale.
Sure, we could all just buy 3500 Diesel DRWs. New, they cost ~$10K than a 2500 Gas SRW. I'd rather avoid that expense, if possible. Asking what has worked for others is a way (admittedly imprecise) of getting a feel for what is legal/reasonable.
I saw all the information you just gave, and wouldn't automatically "assume" to get a 3500 diesel dually to cover, that wouldn't be practical...but GVW is posted somewhere in or on his 5th wheel. Thus, in his defense, it would be BEST to use the 5er's GVW, as opposed to it's "empty" or "dry" weight. THAT would be FAR more practical than using a weight that is pretty much useless....and I agree, NO ONE knows how much one is going to load their unit to...so to "err on the side of safety", or look at "worse case scenario"...I would prefer to look at the 5er''s GVW, figure worse case pin weight and worse case 5er weight, "JUST IN CASE", seems far more practical than figuring 5er will not be loaded at all, or trying to "ballpark" how much weight you're going to put into the 5er, (also useless)......His 2500 may be fine...but speculation can really cost you when towing, which could be the most inopportune time to find out "you figured or/or assumed wrong"....too late then....
