IMO, in California State/federal campgrounds you will definitely be limited with a 40 footer. It's very difficult to ANY campsite in the more popular areas (Santa Cruz, lake Tahoe etc) and having a 40 footer may limit your choices further. You should check the reservation sites for areas you may plan on visiting, they will sometimes have specific details on each camp site, including driveway length (which is not always accurate btw). My BIL actually has made detailed spreadsheets he made on all our favorite places (New Brighton SB, Sunset SB, Seacliff SB, Henry Cowell SP, Fallen Leaf lake etc etc, with 1-5* ratings, measurements, pros and cons of each site (autism is handy sometimes!)
