5er Brakes are shattering/catching/vibrating at low speeds

Not sure what you call it....but my 5er brakes shatter when braking at slow speeds coming to a stop. This trailer is used but new to me. This is the first time I used it on a trip. I installed Tekonsha P3 and followed the install directions.

1. Is it my brake controller settings? If so, how to proceed in adjusting?

2. Is it my trailer brakes? If so, how to proceed in repairing?

Thanks!
  • A brake chatter is kind of hard to diagnose from a keyboard. It could be the drums are out of round, in which case you could replace hubs and brake assembly.

It could be that your controller is just set too aggressive, which you could reset gain, by following instructions.

  • First thing would be too much gain, then too much bias on the P3.
  • Being that the RV is 18 years old, but new to you, it would be wise to have the tires, brakes, and wheel bearings checked. Also the suspension. An inspection should provide an indication of the problem or potential problems. JMHO.

Yep........time to pull the drums, inspect brake assemblies & repack wheel bearings for a start.
Check spring pack bushings and install wet bolt kit

My thoughts also, time to pull the drums, inspect and repack the bearings, replace grease seals, do what is needed to the brakes.
