5th wheel quality compared to early 2000’s?

I haven’t shopped for a new 5th whee in years. I have an 05 Jayco Eagle that I have had since new. Back then Jayco was a good company and Carriage and many others were building good quality trailers.
I have thought about buying a new 5th wheel recently but it seams like most companies are owned by just a few mega manufactures now.
I’m wondering about the quality of the new Jayco trailers and other brands?

What are your thoughts on what is being built today?

Why wouldn't you feel this way? I believe the story was about quality. More options and more problems, we see this in a high end resort. new fifths are very nice.

Can quality be measured in lbs. A new 35' Jayco is 8600 lbs. A new 35' Montana is 10250 lbs. Your 2001 Alpenlite is around 11,700. The dry weight of my 35' 08 Citation is 13k lbs. The dry weight of a new 35.5' DRV is 13800 and a new 36' New Horizons is 17500 lbs.

Weight!!! While “not” the only qualifier....it certainly plays into the equation!

I've been to three rv shows in the last month hopefully to get something new looking on the outside, again. After looking at all the cheapo materials in EVERYTHING out there, I will be keeping mine forever. I haven't looked for several years and I couldn't believe the low quality. Craig

In my opinion they do. Toured the factory in '12 and was impressed, although my '02 Okanagan is still going strong.

The New Horizons was one of the unit’s ( manufactured today) to which I was referring!

Other than New Horizons there likely isn't anything that's going to out do Teton for quality .... Does DRV cut it?

This is my opinion only, and I do not want to offend! I think that they “were” one of the best....after the collapse of the top quality manufacturers during the last decade. However, with their recent merge/buyout....I have serious reservations of their present and future quality. Though they are “much” better than most out there!

We had a 2001 Teton ( one of the lower end units), and we wanted a newer 5er, with some of the newer “bells and whistles”. We thought that DRV (pre-buyout) was the answer. Went all the way ( approx. 2500 miles round trip)to a Chicago suburb, to purchase a “very” lightly used ‘07, Mobile Suites. We were pretty disappointed! The quality of the cabinetry, the quality and weight (thickness) of carpet, really disappointed the wife. I was too busy “drooling” over the auto-leveling, hydraulic disc-brakes, etc. to observe the inside stuff closely. When she pointed out these details ( she has a much better eye than I), and some other small stuff....our low-end 2001 Teton looked “pretty darn good”!
Sooo, we were down to “only” considering Teton’s and Hew Horizons. We feel “very” fortunate to has found our present (2004) Teton.
Teton was not perfect....they had some issues as well. The most notable (to our knowledge) was a year of so of having “improper” j-channel ( I think that is the proper term) on the slides. It would trap water, causing water damage to the slide floor! We went all the way to Galveston,Tx.to look at , what appeared to be a beautiful Teton Grand. This is when we found out about the problem.... in our searches we found several with this issue! All where 2003’s! Don’t know if it was all 2003’s or just the ones we were interested in!

Though we’ve never owned one.....I wouldn’t count out an Excel. They are also out of business....but (as I understand it) some of the employees formed a company to service the Excel’s. So....there is still some factory knowledged folks out there to work on them!

A couple of weeks ago, the wife was “window shopping” (we can’t break the looking addiction) the RV sales websites and found 19 Tetons for sale ( some were mid to late ‘90’s to ‘07). Some had very good prices, but there quality was unknown!

chevman, Alpenlite was one of the high end units of the time and we wanted one then, but couldn't afford it. By then time we could afford one, they were discontinued. I too would keep it as we are keeping ours. We're very happy with the quality of our unit. The only issues we deal with now are maintenance. Something that people like us deal with when we keep our units.

I agree. what doesn't need maintenance? Getting a problem fixed usually is the problem. A great reason for a fifth and not a MH.

Just had a repair on our chev and it runs great . Kinda like getting older as most of us understand.

I've looked at new 5th wheels and I will take our 15 year old HH any day of the week but to keep one this old on the road it requires maintenance and upgrades. The biggest for outside appearance is removing the decals and painting them on.

Where we camp, this is not an issue. Plus, an older well maintained unit is evident.

When it was looked at last season the result came back PERFECT
Might not be back next season if the wife's surgery doesn't go well but set to be here on paper.
