NPR doesn't really say so, but this thing really is a 5er and not a 'tiny house'!!

good for her. Great sense of accomplishment. The easier route would have been buying a used RV or mobile home. The what I would have done but I also don't trust my construction skills.

The "Tiny House" movement is definitely gaining ground among the eco-friendly communities. By building on a trailer chassis, you are exempt from most local zoning laws, especially the ones governing minimum square footage. Most are built on the site they will occupy, or are moved once to their final location. Many are set up for "off the grid" living, with solar power, LED lighting, propane, and wood stoves for heating. Not my cup of tea, but there are definitely some fun and interesting designs floating around the internet for purchase.

I am building something similar.

The reason for me is that I have a spot on my lot where I would like to build guest quarters. I went to the county and was told that I cannot build a permanent structure there. I can, however, erect a "temporary" structure or park a trailer. Their definition of temporary included the RV shelters that are common here as long as I don't pour a slab or foundation. Trailer would include a 10' wide "jobsite" trailer.

I purchased an 80's model 5th wheel and stripped to the frame. This spring I will build a 10' x 30' structure on the frame. It will be of standard 2x construction using standard materials and be well insulated. It will still be a highway legal trailer (oversize permit required) but will probably not ever be moved.

She probably wanted it to have thicker walls and better insulation. Most RV's I have owned are hard to heat in the cold winter.

We are looking to buy a used 5th wheeler. My hubby can rebuild/build anything. We have three 100lbs pups that are coming with us any ideas on what we should be looking for or staying away from used? What are prices etc?

It's not even 7' wide as it does not go over the wheels. Does it have holding tanks? Why not go all the way over the tongue? Can't be any worse built than most trailers.

that thing is going nowhere.

unknown about the dot stuff, can be hung off it, not requird to be part of the structure.
but just looking at the inside, lots of stuff to pack away before moving and to rehang when stopped.

Looking at the exterior picture, it looks like it may be more than 14 feet high, and possibly more than 8'6" wide. Also, as previously stated, there does not appear to be any clearance lights on the roof or sides. There is no rear picture, so there is no way to tell if there are any tail/stop/turn signals.
My guess is, not towable without some sort of special permit.
I know, it is a technicality, but it is a gooseneck trailer, not a fifth wheel.

She has "brand new" for $11,000.
Probably built better than most $50-60,000 5'ver's.

I don't see any DOT lights on it, so forget about towing it down the road.

Why cause women can't build "things"?
That has nothing to do with it, it just seems a little too pat. I just think the media had the wool pulled over their eyes again.

Because at under 400 sq ft it's an "RV" and not a "mobile home" so the rules for RVs apply rather then mobile home

When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.
