add on fuel tanks

Last year we went on a trip to New Mexico. I was towing a 38 ft Keeston Rapture with my 2012 F350 with the 6.7 engine. Going through Nebraska we hit very strong head winds and my MMG went from 10.5 to 7 MPG. Being I have a small fuel tank in this truck we were forced to stop every 150 to 175 miles. Its tough to make any time stopping so often. So I am thinking about add on saddle tanks in the box, or replacing the factory fuel tank if theres room for a larger one. I am also looking into a programer to bust fuel economy. Does any one have ant suggestions or Ideas?

Could be...they offer a 60 & 65 tank.

The thing about having an aux tank is not about bladder and stops, it is about comfort. I put an aux tank (45 gals) with tool box before going on a trip to Colorado in October. Seems like my only fuel was filling my aux tank every morning before pulling out, and still having 34 gallons left on board the truck for emergency stops or not having to stop. It was a great stress reliever for fuel .
great investment that takes the stress off, and comes in handy if you are stuck on the interstate. Got it from northern tool with the gravity feed and the shutoff valve.

I have a 60 gal RDS gravity fed tank. It is DOT certified in all 50 states. They have roll over shut off. As far as diesel is concerned these tanks which feed directly to the main tank are legal even in Calif. It is illegal to feed directly to a carb or injectors. I researched a number of tanks out there before I bought RDS and all of those are DOT certified. I bought mine from Union Hydro on sale for around $700 with the install kit. I spent about $20 more for stainless bolts, nuts etc. Installed myself without issue. Last big trip was over 5,000 miles and I decided where and when to get fuel. I travel with my wife and three little dogs. Now I stop for breaks whenever they need them not timed to fuel stops. Heck I only get fuel about every third day anyway.

I bought this 45gal tank from this company and it works great. Also doesn't take up much room in the bed.

04 Super Duty you gave maybe the most sensible reason for an aux. tank. avvidclif1 I like your style and I am going to buy two of plastic aux. tanks. What is the best siphon?

I added a 50 gallon bed mounted tank for the added convenience, not to save any money. Just like going with a diesel, you don't necessary need an auxiliary tank, but trying to get into a small mom and pop gas station in the middle no where with a 35 ft 5er behind me does not sound like any fun. Now i can drive for a full day, set the camper up and go back into town to fuel up.

I would like to add an auxiliary tank but then the weight police would be all over me. Even a 40 gal tank is over 300 lbs with tank and fuel.

Wal-Mart sells a 12 gal marine fuel tank that fits perfectly and neatly in the short bed that is low profile and cost $100. I could add another side by side if I wanted to. A manual pump costs anywhere from $10 to $50 depending on how fancy you want to get. I installed that tank and saved myself a lot of money. It takes a long time "if ever" for $1000 tank to pay for itself with fuel savings. To me it is a waste of money to buy the expensive add on tanks. I can also use that auxiliary tank on my boat if I rinsed the diesel out. So far after 12,000 miles of towing a 16k fifth wheel, I have not needed to use the reserve. I transfer the fuel every few months to keep the fuel fresh.

I do carry 2 5gal jugs. It helps, 10 gallons will most time get us to a place where fuel is cheaper or back home. But they are messy, and can be pain to deal with. At some point I will install a auxiliary tank of at least 40 gallons. If I save a little on fuel great, but the main reason would just be convenience.

I have a 45 gal rectangular tank, about 10 inches deep, that is flush with the bed rails. I found it on Craigslist complete with a 12 volt pump, hose & nozzle, and filter assembly for a whopping $150. Can't say I've seen one like that for a similar cost....but I really haven't been looking since I found mine.

Why not carry one or two 5 gal "Jerry cans" for emergency purposes. Or a 12 gal marine tank. They are a lot cheaper and provide a peace of mind. Of course you need fuel transfer pump that do not cost much.
