Thank you Craig for your feedback. Vietvet 66, we will continue to work on this until it works as it should. No offense taken as we can all use help/suggestions now and again.
We have the Big Foot Leveling system on our Carriage and it is
supposed to bring the 5th wheel back up to the hitch height it had when we unhooked each time. I'm not sure if this will affect your way of getting the hitch to lock but we are certainly going to try any and all suggestions.
It was just such a shocker to all of a sudden not have an easy one time back in to have the hitch close on the 1st try. We won't be moving til Monday but I will keep y'all posted on how we make out. Thanks to both of you again. Hugs, Di

Dutch, don't know if this is how you do it, but this works for me.
Been using a Curt q20 for two years now with no problems at all.
I just let the nose down till the plate above the pin is sitting on
the back edge of the hitch "shoe" so that when I back up the weight of
5er is being put on the hitch. No problem with the hitch closing.
I do on occasion have to move forward a 1/4' or so till it click's in.
Hope this helps you and in no way am I saying you are doing anything
wrong, only what has worked for me. No offence intended.
John.
