Atwood 2000 lb Landing Jack 75030 Bevel Gear Substitute
The gears in the follow leg on our 96 Jayco that we use as a hunting camp trailer failed. I soon discovered that the replacement gear kit from Atwood #75030 is obsolete and unavailable. Researching this over a few days I identified a set of gears that are very similar. If you are looking for a budget fix of the 2,000lb Atwood landing jack gears see below.
Bulldog Sidewind Gear Kit 5,000 lb. Part # 500106. I paid under $14.00 on Amazon.
There are a few minor modifications you need to perform to make this kit work.
1. You MUST use the gear pins from your original gears. The ones included in the kit are too small in diameter.
2. You will need to widen the slot the long pin slides through on the top, horizontal gear so that the old pin will pass through. This is easily accomplished by holding the gear in a vice or press and using a hand drill to widen the slot making sure to follow the bottom of the slot as that is where the pin needs to be. I started with a 3/16 bit and worked up to a 7/32 bit.
3. You also need to widen the width of the shorter slot on the bottom vertical gear so the original pin will fit into the bottom of the gear slot. I used a small carbide burr in a Dremel tool to do this. I did not have to remove much material.
4. Place pin in vertical shaft using a pair of needle nose pliers, then install bottom gear ensuring it is fully seated on the pin and shaft.
5. Test the upper gear fit by installing on the horizontal drive shaft. Slide gear toward the bottom gear and using a pair of feeler gauges, measure the width of the gap between the back of the gear and the shaft bushing face. On my jack it was .040" I wanted the gear lash to be as tight as possible so I made a .035" shim.
6. Remove shaft and gear. Reinstall shaft placing shim between shaft bushing and gear.
7. Orient long pin with slot in gear and hole in shaft. Using a punch, drive long pin through shaft.
8. Apply grease to gears and test operation by connecting drill to horizontal shaft. Clockwise raises the jack.
9. Reinstall dust cover, mount jack back in 5th wheel and connect to drive shaft.
I hope this information helps someone. I did not want to completely replace the landing gear as this is a budget 5th wheel we only use once or twice per year. If you are efficient you can complete all the steps from removal to reinstallation in 30-45 minutes.
