Auxiliary Fuel Tank options

I have an aux tank in my bed that sits about an inch below the bedrails. Then I went looking for a tonneau cover. The problem I kept running into was that many brands had components that hung down lower then an inch, even though the cover itself had adequate clearance. So I ended up going with a Truxedo soft cover roll-up. I like it much better then I thought I would. 3 years old now and looks and works great. Cannot be opened if your tailgate is locked (Yes, I know - a knife). $300 installed.

I like the Bak Revolver 2 and the BakFlip G2. I will likely go with the Revolver as it will roll up and still leave a line of sight to the hitch. I haven't checked the clearance yet on the tool box lid, but that will be a factor of course.

The two factors for me are a hard or rigid cover, and it must ride above the bed rails

What are you looking at for a tonneau cover? I'm looking for one myself that will fit over a tool box.

It does look like a nice combo from a quality outfit. You should get years of service out of it and then it will be ready for your next rig.

Yes - just a bit. Most everything else I could find with an automatic pump vs. gravity drain was kicking the door in on $2000.

I paid $150 for a 'rush job' because I wanted it before we left home, then another fee for the Bed Liner. I also paid an install fee as I didn't have time to do the work myself.

You're probably better off with the external fill. If you'd put it in the box it may have required a partitioned space with a drain. This way you don't lose any storage space.

I'll have to say it looks really good. Was it much more expensive than RDS and the others?

Just in case you guys were curious where we landed, we had this one made to our specs and installed.




It was manufactured by ATTA in Ft Worth. We talked over the phone about what I wanted, they sent me a design drawing, I made a deposit on Monday and they installed the tank on Friday. I paid a little extra for the custom job, then a little for the bed linter spray, but we love it. The 65 gallon added capacity took us DFW to Memphis without stopping for fuel, then again on the run from Memphis to Gatlinburg. I also had them install their version of an 'auto filler pump' with a switch and gauge in the console. It automatically fills my factory tank to full when it senses that the factory tank is below 1/2.

As you can see, it is below the rails for the tonneau cover (next item to purchase). it does take up a few more inches of bed space than I prefer, but I was willing to trade that for fuel capacity. If I had it to do over again, I would specify that the filler cap be inside the toolbox section. This would make it safer and closer in height to the bed rails.

We added our 55 gal inbed tank when the 05 truck was new. It has been a great item for us. I use the main tank only if needed and save that fuel for insurance if some bad fuel has been bought. Have not had any bad fuel yet but insurance isn't always needed. I have seen 100 gal tanks but that seems like big over kill.

I am thinking about using the bottom 3" of my big toolbox as a fuel tank. It would give me about 23 extra gallons and that would be the same volume as the Titan 55 gallon replacement tank.
