It depends on how you treat them. When I am not out camping, boating, my batteries are always connected to a battery tender. I usually get a lot longer battery life by doing this.
To many variables to say how long a battery should last! Do you store it disconnected or with a charger? If a charger, is it a smart charger? How often do you run the battery way down? Do you use it in cold, warm or hot weather? What kind of drain is put on the battery? If lead acid, how often do you check each cell for water evaporation? Do you use pure distilled water when you refill? These would be only some of the things that would either shorten or lengthen the life of the battery! So if it dies in a month or lasts for 5 years would depend on exactly what you are doing with the battery!

Depends... I know people who have killed a battery in a week. OTOH, I know people who have used batteries for close to 10 years.
