I am in northern Illinois Chicago area and am looking to sell my toy hauler. I have not had much interest on craigslist and was wondering if there is a better place to try and sell.

I get inquiries on craigslist but most of them are stupid questions because the answer is in the ad or they just send a message with a dollar amount half of what I'm asking.

I tried RVTrader RVT and Craigs for a couple months this Summer. Not a single inquiry. I was priced $4,000 under LOW NADA retail. Priced it lower than all the competition. Rig is perfect, loaded with extras. Lots of pictures too. I just don't think the market for bigger fifth wheels, toyhaulers etc is very good in the Midwest. Keep seeing the same ads for months. If you're a seller or a buyer you better be ready for a very long wait to get out when you decide to sell...

I vote for craigslist. I am looking for a trailer right now and craigs is where most of the trailers for sale are listed.

I cannot say enough about the importance of lots of very high quality pictures and a quality comprehensive add. I look as so many trailers that have terrible cell phone pics from a greasy camera with their finger in the picture. My suggestion would be use a real digital camera and take 30-40 pics. Then get the options list for your model of trailer and list every option you have. Finally make sure that the maint you have done is listed and when it was done.

If you don't spend at least 1-2 hours getting the pics and creating your add you are leaving buyers and money on the table in my opinion. I am willing and have paid more for things when I feel like they were well taken care of and I know what I am getting. Just my .02 Cents.

We also sold our Work and Play on Craigslist. January is actually a great time to list because of Daytona Bike Week, which is usually late Feb/early March. This is a tough time of year to sell any RV.

Ebay is also good for wider exposure, but we've had a lot of scam replies and virtual tire kickers from ebay ads. Never had a single reply from ads on the RV Trader site - total waste of money.

Make up fliers and call your local motorcycle dealers to post them. They all have bulletin boards to put up for sale ads and I'm sure would be happy to help you.

Google those types of places.

But you still can't change the weather.

This is the info I was looking for but I was hoping some locals would chime in on where these places are.

I think your big enemy is selling in the Fall in the North where it is cold. You might be better off selling it in the Spring.

Craig's List with plenty of pictures, specifications and description. I sold my Weekend Warrior that way during the month of January after advertising it in November and December of the previous year.

Definitely Craigslist. RvTrader is over priced and quickly becoming obsolete imho. When selling my RV all the people i spoke to under 40 didnt even do a search on rvtrader only CL, plus you cant beat the price.

Good Luck

I sold my last hauler this time of year for what I wanted. Had a lot of interest too. eBay gives you 6 free vehicle listings a year. craigslist will get you local views. If no luck, then RV Trader is a good last resort.

Time of year is a challenge for you at this point. CraigList can be good but many are looking for a killer deal. Lots of pics can help, as well as full details. The more details you provide the better it will look to a serious buyer. Many sellers just toss up a price and a pic, that doesn't do it for higher cost items.

Expand your posting area. Many CraigsList buyers never look out of their immediate area. For a Toy Hauler people are willing to travel (for the right deal) so post your ad up on other major metro areas within a reasonable drive.

Know your price too. NADA will help, look for what others are asking too. Many RV owners are upside down on their loan, in that case you need to take a loan to get your price down where the market is at.

Just my thoughts for you. Good luck.

craigslist.

I have sold several RV's plus vehicles as well on craigslist. Sold quickly for good money, and no advertising or listing fees. Provide lots of quality pics and full specs and details for the prospective buyers.

I have never had any luck selling on Trader Publications. I don't know about RV's, but with vehicles, they were leaving the ads up long after you asked them to cancel them (I had to ask them 2 or 3 times to take my ad down) to pad the number of listings they had. Craigslist has dealt a huge blow to Trader Publications.
