Checking bearings and brakes

Much discussion and varied opinions on how often to open up the drums and check the bearings. I am of the group that says to open and inspect. I do not use the Dexter EZLube system

I typically do an inspection every spring. Never found an issue on any inspection and ALMOST decided to wait until next year.

Today I started on the bearings and brakes.
First set in good shape, clean and not over greased.
Second wheel. Outer cone had spalling on the rollers. Prior to removing I heard a growl when spinning.
Third set. Both cones had spalling and a few chips. This wheel made NO noise when spinning.
Fourth wheel. When I removed the hub the brake magnet fell down. Upon inspection I found the bent section of the cam where the magnet and spring mounted to have broken off. No damage to the drum.
So. Two wheels with damaged cones and only one made noise. The wheel with the broken level made no noise when spinning. No grease leakage behind the seals.
New brake assembly ordered. For 10 years I have kept a 2 sets of bearings in my camper. Never needed them until today.
  • Yes. Wise to inspect/re-pack at least every couple years. Nice to be able to do it yourself. At my dealer, it is $400 for just that service. If you need any new parts, even more.
  • I'm old school too. Only thing is I have six to do. They are Dexter "Easy Lube" hubs which I never use. Just a marketing ploy and a fancy take-off of bearing Buddies.
  • I'm in your group also Charlie, and glad you didn't wait until next year.
  • Wise man!
Sure better to do all that at home rather than in a cmp site.
    Or side of the road.
  • Charlie, that's why I do my inspection every spring. You never know, and it is a very small price to pay, both in money and time, for peace of mind for the season.
