Considering a TH - Questions

Have a 2012 F350 SRW LWB diesel and a 34' Cougar FW and am considering a TH but worried about the weight of rig and pin weight. Current unit is 10k shipping weight and 1500# pin weight. Most TH I see are about 15k and up to 4k pin weight. I know the truck has plenty of power but I'm worried about the weight on rear axle and tires. Already know DRW will be better but new truck is not in the equation. Anyone with a SRW F350 and large toyhauler out there? Experiences?

My buddy pulls his 43 foot XLR thunderbolt with a dry weight of 14k pounds just fine with his 13 F350 SRW. He pulled it all over Montana this summer for 3 weeks. I'm not saying that's for everyone, but it works for him. Everyone has their own tolerance for towing.

If you go to the Ford.com site you can download the towing guide, look at your truck configuration and compare the numbers. That'll allow you to know what THEY say is safe, then you can make an informed decision.

It depends on the brand. We started shopping XLR Thunderbolts specifically because they have lighter pin weight compared to the identical floorplans from the competition. They do this by way of more forward placement of their axles. I didn't want a DRW so XLR it was. We tow our 395AMP with a 2012 SRW 350 6.7 SB and are completely satisfied with the way it tows. (Like and arrow that is.) Garage weight doesn't change the pin much so don't count on it to offset a pin too heavy for your truck. With 2000# in our garage, our pin only gets around 200# lighter. Our hauler weighs over 20k with the garage full and the water tanks full and with it's lighter pin we are still under on the trucks GVWR, GAWR, and tire ratings. We are over on GCWR but I've never been concerned with that. In the spring we are ordering a new 2017 SRW 350 and with it's new increased ratings, we will be under on GCWR too though.

Anyways, that was the long answer. The short answer is yes, it's perfectly doable if you find a large TH with a lower pin. Start with XLR. They are a great company making a great product that may well fit your needs.

We looked at TH but DW said no way. My research conclusion about factory dry weight of pin is higher because the garage is empty. A 4k pinweight empty is more than when you have 1500 lbs of weight in the garage behind the trailer axles. Hopefully you will get real world replies to this. (Your current fiver loaded will probably have a real world pin weight of more than 2000 lbs BTW).
