Dampness, mildew and the use of dehumideriers

Does anyone use dehumidifiers in their 5ers and if so, what is the best size to use? My unit is a 30 ft 5er with a single slide, I'm assuming about 150 sq ft.

Damp Rid x2! I have used it for years, in my boat, and RVs, depending on how humid, you need to check it occasionally and dump the water and/or replace the damp rid! With the vents open you can get circulation of air, which will also help.

Will NEVER use the crystals again!!! NEVER EVER, one small spill and I needed to rebuild a kitchen storage cabinet! It turned the wood into a sponge and would never dry out.
    Eva-Dry

I use Eva-Dry captive pellets, plug in in an open space to dry out and renew, pellets go from Blue to Pink dry to used, NOTHING to spill and damage wood products.
  • We had a 34', 4 slide Crossroads Cruiser, and now have a 40' Bay Hill, and we use an Eva-Dry 2200. Here in the humid Houston area, we drain out about a quart and a half per week. We wouldn't I be without it.
  • We purchased a dehumidifier last summer and it has been the best upgrade we have done to the trailer.

We do not take it with us when traveling but leave it in the RV when at home. When we first turn it on we set it to continuous for the first couple of days then run it at 45% or so. Depends on which one of us sets it up.

Initially the tank will fill up in a couple of days but after that I check and empty the tank once a week. Ours has the hose option if we were to choose to use it.

It gets humid here in Georgia and it has been one of those items that has really made a difference. The chemical dehumidifiers did not work for us.

During the winter we will turn it off and empty the tank if we are expecting a freeze. We polug it back in if its projected to stay above freezing.

  • I use a dehumidifier in our 32' fiver with a single slide, don't know the size but I set it on the kitchen cabinet when we are home so it drains into the kitchen sink & keep the roof vents closed. Works well. :)
  • Do you have dampness in your fiver?
Do you keep the skylight lids open?
Ive never had mildew, dampness in my campers with lids open yr round when not occupied.
You didnt go into much detail about the problem your having. But you should not have any of that in your camper, nor should you need to use a dehumidifier. We have dewpoints in the high seventies just like you and never had a issue.I have a 40 ft fiver.

What I do use in the winter when rv doesnt move for 7 months is a pail of damp rid( water removing crystals) Maybe you can try using those in conjunction with opening the lids.I just cant see how or why you would need a dehumidifier running.
  • Sorry everyone. I missed the sq ft by about 1/2, it should be abour 280 sq ft.
