I have an 07 F-350 dually. Bought it new and got the extended warranty. But never had any major issues. I am at 60,000 miles. My wife and I are preparing to go fulltime. So thinking about trading it for a newer F-350 with 4 wheel drive. But only thinking at this time. I think it is a 50/50 chance of issues arising. But I did give my dealer an ear full when he told me my truck was worthless when it comes to a trade in. I wont share my reply to him. But he did lose my bussiness.
Take what would be a $1k/month truck payment and put it in the bank every month. Call it your truck replacement fund. Hit the road and if the time comes when it needs replacement you may have close to the replacement cost stashed along with the trade-in value.
If you were working or on vacation you would be pressed for time but fulltiming, nope. We'll be there when we get there if we can figure out where there is.
That sounds good in theory - but in reality you have consider that, A) It's not really $1K a month towards a new truck, because the 2007 is continuously depreciating by miles and year. Even though it's a diesel, once it hits 100K miles, it's pretty much at the bottom of the resale market. B) If it develops a major issue (shells the engine) and it's now out of warranty, it may only be worth scrap value unless you are prepared to put the $12K or so to re-engine to make it have value again (you just lost a good chunk of any resale value it had putting in the new engine), and C) You are generations behind in technology - not just the engine, but the transmissions and electronics.
If that 2007 with 60,000 miles is clean, you won't be anywhere near $1K a month to replace it with a 2015 given the trade value. Go for it, enjoy the new technology and warranty as you start your new lifestyle!
