Fridge/freezer raising temperature

I am full timing currently in a 1995 33.5 Avion 5th wheel. The temperature has been hanging around 0, rising to maybe 15 during the day. Today my fridge all of a sudden is up around 50, and my freezer is around 30....

Would this have anything to do with the cold temperatures outside? It has always worked perfect.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ok, thanks for the help guys. I am going to shop for fridges this weekend. I do take the family camping quite a bit in the summer, so I will get one that will run on propane/12 volt. I do have an onboard generator, but wouldn't want to run it 24/7 while camping.

They make fridges now that are 110v/12v/propane??

Hi,

Yuup...you can get some nice 12v compressor fridges nowadays.

Also, the temperature is gradually rising in both the fridge and freezer...

How long since you attempted to thaw it out? (hours?)

I haven't turned the fridge off since I noticed it was warming up. Do I need to turn it off for a while, with the light bulb in the compartment?

Hi pjohn,

Or else when the fridge froze up the boiler tube got clogged from over heating.

How long did you let it run?

Ok, warmed it up pretty good with a space heater at first, then put a light bulb inside as well. The tank feels warm, but the coils above still are very cold. Is it possible the fridge just gave out, being that my 5th wheel is almost 20 years old... The freezer is staying at about 44, and the fridge is staying about 52....

Might have to warm it up in order for it to cool........

A light bulb in outside compartment down low just above the 'tank'
Is it time for your medication or mine?

Hi,

Yes, it has to do with the working fluid "gelling" when it is too cold. Surf here to learn what to do about it.

This is the first time I have been in this cold of weather, but I have been here over a month, and the last 3 weeks have been this cold with no problem. I just noticed today the fridge was warmer than it should be..

Has it always worked "perfectly" in those same ambient temperatures?
