Headed to Mt. Rushmore in july, how about the bugs?

My wife really has this thing about using bug sprays. How is the bug issues in july at Mt. Rushmore?
  • Very few bugs in Hill City and much of South Dakota. Very nice compared to Wisconsin.

Pine Beetle is the only bug but it doesn't bother people. Just trees.

This is slightly off topic but Crazy horse is more impressive when you consider one man started building it with nothing, he had to build a place to live then build a road to be able to get to the mountain. I was there in the early 80s and look forward to going back.

Yes sir, that's on our list of things to see!

Keep in mind, lots of motorcycle traffic that last week of July. The Sturgis Rally is officially the first full week of August but they (we) start showing up earlier and earlier to avoid the massive crowds, at least to some extent.

We planned for that and are coming out the second week in July. No way i'm getting in that mess with all those bikes!
  • the bugs will not be a problem but the Bison could be and they are a lot bigger than bugs.
  • Never noticed any the times we were there, but never camped in a boggy area, nor in a really willow congested area. We've been there after rains, too.

Info on the Black Hills Area. And more on the Rushmore Area at the bottom of the post.

  • I agree. Been there a couple of times and don't remember any particular bug problems, either early or late July.
  • The Black Hills is relatively bug-free ... at least it used to be when I grew up there years ago. (At least the bugs that bug people ... pine beetles are another sad story)
