Importing a utility trailer from Canada to the U.S.

Posting in FWs as this is where I hang out most. Mods, please feel free to move as you see fit.

I'm looking at buying some equipment in Canada that also would include a commercial-built tandem axle utility trailer. Maybe 5k GVW, but not 100% sure. What do I need to do to import this? If I have the VIN, can I get a local temp plate for it and leave the Canadian plate with the current owner? Declarations? Title transfer? Any info is appreciated. I =will= be checking with our local MVD.

Purchase a transporter tag / plate from your local DMV office. Show up at U.S. Customs with transporter plate on trailer. Have the CBP form #6059B completed and declare your trailer to the receiving agent.

Google form #6059B and print off CBP website or PM me and I will send you a link.

Should not be a problem to import on a personal declaration as long as you accompany the item being imported. If you have a commercial entity bring the trailer across the border for you, and you are NOT present, the trailer will need to be entered (formal entry) by a broker.

Thanks, Lakeside. Can't do this as temp plates can only be issued for vehicles/trailers that already have a record here in AZ; first place I checked was AZDOT about this. I've been told that 1 or 2 Customs forms and a bill of sale is all I should need. Canada doesn't use titles for trailers. I've also since spoken to the owner of the trailer mfr in MB and she was very helpful and said she'd have no problem in writing a letter stating that this trailer met the 1996 specs for US DOT. Trailer was mfr'd in '96.

Someone who's actually =done= this is likely to know more than the usual drones you get on the phone, which is why I asked.

Canada does not have titles for utility trailers. I =think= there is a single Customs form to fill out, but am still trying to confirm. The other issue is the tags. If I were going t'other way, I'd get a "take out" temp plate from AZ MVD to leave the state, but don't know about bringing one in. If the tags are still valid, I'm wondering if I can just bring it down and mail the plate back, as the easiest solution.
