Jacking up front of 5er

I'm on a steep hill and unable to get the trailer level front to back. I want to raise the front slightly with a bottle jack so I can lower the landing gear. If I place a 4x4 across between the landing gear supports with the jack in the center is the structure of the frame strong enough to support it? Must I jack each side up separately? Thanks for your help.
  • I wouldn't risk jacking your fifth up with one bottle jack in the middle like you're describing. That sounds dangerous. Hooking your truck back up is the safer way to go. I would lay some planks or whatever under the (rear) truck wheels when you go to level the trailer, you'd be that little bit higher you claim you need and would be raising your trailer safely without damage to your fifth. Just my two cents though, do what you feel you can handle.

    The trailers frame is strong enough but I doubt a small 4x4 6'-7'long will be heavy enough to lift 3000 lbs by jacking in the center of it. It will probably break pretty quick as the frame is maybe 5'- 6' apart. I would use two jacks placed under the timber close under the frame rails instead of just one in the center.
    If I understand you correctly the 4x4 will be up against the trailers 2 main frame rails which won't hurt a thing. Don't use a cross member as they're just thin rolled steel.

    This was common year ago when campgrounds were all basically unimproved. We dug holes in the ground on the high side and blocked the low side to get a camper level.
    We've camped with the landing jacks all the way down or and all the way up just to get level.

    I have the same issue at our usual boondock site. I pull in, level SxS, chock the wheels, then power down the landing legs nearly to the ground (~2') before dropping the extensions; maybe 6-8", max. I unhitch, then drop the nose of the FW to level. It's usually about 18". I always do this hooked to the truck, with the engine running, since I'm running the jacks so much.

  • The fiver is large but tongue weight is around 2700 lbs. I can't accomplish much by re-hitching because the slope up in the front effects the truck as well. I have the trailer chocked well so not worried about it rolling. I only need to raise a tiny bit so legs can be shortened.

  • Not sure what your frame looks like. Why not just run the 4x4 vertical to the pin box and jack it with your bottle jack following closely with the front legs for safety?

    On re-direct, that's assuming that you can't get enough elevation if you hitch up and restart the leveling process (that would be best if it would work).
  • I don't know, how big is the 5th wheel? If it were me, I would just re-hook up to the truck and start over leveling it.
