Junk Yard Gas Tank for Aux Fuel

Check eBay out for aluminum dune buggy or hot rod fuel tanks. 10-15 gallon models frequently are for sale for under $150.

Some people use a 55gal drum. Hand pump or electric. Beats 5gal cans.

My signature shows that I'm using a Chevy van now but I intend to trade in for a pickup this winter so I'm not carrying the generator and gas tank in an unventilated space. Another, although more expensive, alternative to junk yard tanks is an aftermarket, universal fuel tank sourced from the hot rod industry. A 13 gallon tank would be about 100# when full.

IMO, correct mounting the tank is what will make this idea workable and semi safe.

Problem is, mounting a 200#(?)plus, full oem gas tank in your PU bed could be a challenge. Most of the oem tanks are weird shapes and do not have a perfectly flat bottom, making mounting the tank sturdily a real challenge.
But with some good planning, sure it could be done.

Where are you going to mount the auxiliary fuel tank? Trailer or van?

If it's in the back of a pickup with a tonneau cover its looks don't matter too much. The cheap red plastic tanks they sell for this purpose don't impress me either. I'd kind of like to find a boxy black polyethylene tank for this purpose. It looks like the standard fuel pumps put out about 40 gph so it would take about 3 minutes to fill up my scooter.

Better get the tank boiled out, checked for leaks, and then add sta-bil or some other gasoline preservative.
