Ladder on back

As someone said, all trailers need a roof ladder on the back so that you can hang your other ladder on it.

I have an 8ft aluminum folding ladder I want to hang on my trailer roof ladder. How do most folks attach these? I'm thinking some type of hook at the top that just catches over the trailer ladder and then bungies at the bottom. What other ideas, ways is it done?

Also, how many padlock it as well? Not really concerned about the RV parks, but what about few hour stops touring along the way.

Thanks,
Ron

I bought a telescoping ladder from Home Depot and it is a great unit. 12' 5" extended but aside from the heaviness, it serves me well and can be stowed just about anywhere and out of site. Besides, my Cedar Creek doesn't have a ladder anyway.

I have at times questioned this until this weekend. I woke up Sunday to about 3 inches of wet heavy snow on my slides. It was impossible to get the slides in because the snow compacted between the T-Mold and the side wall. The only way to clear the snow was to climb on a snow cover roof that has both a curve and is somewhat sloped and as stated above 13 feet off the ground. Not something I want to do again. I plan on carrying a ladder from now on. Hope I never have to use it.

My daughter gave me one of the multi-ladder by Werner for Christmas. MT-13 I think. Real handy. I've always questioned the strength of the RV ladders. In a pinch I'll use it but if a planned evolution I'll use the regular ladder. I'm 6'2" and 205 lbs and climb ladders at work all the time, and the camper ladder feels soft.

I have a six foot folding one, also fits in the storage compartment. It is great and had to use it a few times, awning issues, branches, cleaning off the slide top, hanging a swing from a tree for the grand kids, etc. Family used to tease me that I would need one, but is seems that almost every trip, someone needs to borrow it. Good Luck & Be Safe ! ! !

Some of us are FT'ers and a ladder is a requirement. Getting on the roof is not the issue as we can do that with the ladder on the rig. Its all the other times a ladder is required, getting things off the top of the slides, washing and waxing the rig, changing the light bulbs in the scare lights etc etc.

We use a 16ft extension ladder that we attach to the existing aluminum RV ladder by way of two good quality ratchet straps. We just traveled 4,000 miles with this setup and had zero problems. A check of the tightness of the straps is a mandatory step in the "check at every stop" list and it was never once found to be loose.

To answer the question of why do we carry this beast the answer is simple: I am a person of heft, or phatitude, if you like. I can no longer do the climb straight up a ladder thing and so I need the extension ladder to provide a bit of a slope for me to climb up. Also, I have little faith that the flimsy RV ladder will hold my heft or that it won't pull itself right off of the back of the RV if I happen to lean too much booty out behind my centre of gravity.

Cheers All!

So I am guessing you can reach the top of the sidewalls from the ground? My trailer is nearly 13 feet tall. I am only 6'1" hence the need for a ladder for cleaning and maintaining the trailer.

I have a 7 foot step ladder that I keep in the basement area. I can reach everything on the trailer using this ladder. Got it at China-Mart for about $50.

I built a set of brackets to hang 8' ladder on frame behind trailer wheels. Works like a charm. If I knew how to post a picture on RV.net I would show you. Sorry.

Seen lots of folks use some form of these for ladders, chairs, etc.

I use one of these to mount one of our 8' kayaks to the ladder. Set it just so you can see brake lights and the run five bungee cords around the kayak. Very solid and stable. I can barely see the edge of the kayak in my mirror so I know if it should ever decide to leave.

Thanks for the feedback and options.

Benoit1967 - Ice rain in TX a month ago convinced me the value of a ladder to clean off the slide, ended up borrowing one. If I didn't have slides I wouldn't bother but don't want to close them with lots of stuff on them (leaves, branches, certainly not 2" of ice).

You asked also about a padlock, I use one of those cable padlocks. Similar to a bike lock only heavier. Picked it up at a farm supply store. Make sure it is made out of aircraft cable. I use a decent padlock. Just make sure you either have extra keys or write that combination code down. I put the combo code in my truck manual, next to my keypad code for the truck door. I also have written both down via magic marker in an inconspicuous place where the weather cannot wear it off out side of any locked doors but yet not seen and must know where it is to see it. Used it more than once already!

Use a bicycle rack that just hooks over what ever step you choose. Camping world item. Just use a cable with loops to put your lock through.
