Level ride

The front of my 21' FW rides a bit high. I've adjusted the hitch as much as I can and can raise the pin box by 2" but haven't. Have 7-8" clearance at the bedrails as it stands.

Is it worth the hassle to raise the pinbox to drop the nose of the trailer? How important is a level trailer for towing?
  • Hard to say what a little high is, maybe just the 2" I can adjust it. Suppose next time I have it hooked up I can find a level spot, which is easier said then done, and take a 4' level to it while hooked up.

I like the CAT scale method, don't know how much a couple inch change would make but it'd be interesting to find out.

    Thanks folks.
  • Define "a bit high". Personally, I tow about 2" nose high, with about 8" of bed clearance. I =need= that clearance to get into some of the spots we go and it's worth the small out-of-level that I am to keep it. I'm well over-tired (E range instead of D's), so having a bit extra on the rear axle, if I could even tell, won't hurt anything.

  • The point of being level is to keep the weight on the axles equal.

So go to a CAT scale with full travel load in the 5er and get the weights on each axle first. Easy to do with a double axle trailer, but requires a little more back and forth with some math for a triple axle.

If they are within 100 lbs of being equal then do not worry about being a little high in the nose. You can always shift your load some to move 100lbs from one axle to the other. It is more important to keep the weight distribution equal than to be absolutely level.
  • I am towing 1-2 inches nose high, with 6 inches of bed clearance. It is not worth the trouble, to raise the FW, in my case, but for you, with 8 inches bed clearance, I would raise the pin box, to make it level.

Not hard to raise pin box, biggest issue is getting bolts loose.
The back the TV up to it to support the nose, the remove either the front bolts or rear and "walk" the pin box one set of holes at a time. Did mine by myself no issues. I used the TV bed as a safety, but musled the moves. One could also use the LG the move the pin box.
