Lippert air pin box

So I have a 2007 Rage'n 40' fiver triple axle,20,000 hitch in bed, 2012 F-350 Dually 6.7,we do get sometimes some chucking and bounce depending on the road. On our last trip we ran it across the scales this is what we came up with steer axle 4830, drive axle 7380, trailer axle 14400, total axle 26600. Pulling forward with just the trailer axle on 14540. That is with the trailer loaded RZR,food etc (no water) truck with full tank and two people. So I would like some put from those that switched to this pin box, before and after, it's seems it makes a difference from the research I have done. I just wanted to make sure before I spend a 1000 dollars on this hitch. I would like to say after I put it on, I should have done it along time ago! Ps we do a lot of dry camping on dirt roads so hoping it helps on this aspect too. Thanks

You need the ACTUAL trailer weight, and the actual truck weight with and without the trailer (rear axle of the truck is what we want). The goal is the rear axle of the truck supports 20-25% of the trailers actual total weight.

this is good advice and food for thought. I know I have some chucking on rough roads but generally the trailer tows great. Towed my BIL's trailer once which was considerably lighter and the chucking was greater, noticed that truck didn't settle as much either, assume pin weight was a lot less.

And the suggestion of air bags is to get the truck off the overloads, noticed a big difference on my 2005 when I added bags and got it off the heavy springs, rode much nicer. The new truck must have a heavier spring pack.

  • RCMAN46, what you are saying is i need to weight the truck only? Then I figure out the pin weight.
  • Need to have the axle weights of the truck only. From this the pin weight percentage can be calculated.

If pin weight is less than 20% increase it to 25% and you may find most of the problems will go away.
  • I put one on my 40' TH and it did help quite a bit. Not fixed, but maybe 1/3 of what it was.
  • we had a LOT of chucking. I started by replacing the kingpin with an a Reece 5th Airborne kingpin. That took care of about 60% of the chucking issue. I then installed Firestone Air Ride with the onboard compressor on my F-450. Solved the chucking issue and leveled up the truck with the 5th wheel attached. I wish I would have started with the air ride system. Might not have needed the 5th Airborne kingpin. Let us know what you decided! Good luck
  • I have heard good things as well but like you thinking it is a lot of money and I need to know for sure it is money well spent.
  • My buddy had that on his 40' Warrior and he loved it. Said it made all of the lurching and such go away.
