Are the maxis st tires any better than the rest. I have 230/80/16 tires now and I don't think I can go to the 235/85/16 due to clearance I have blown power King and marathons I am trying to find a good tire if there is one. I only have about 2 inches of clearance above these tires now.

The ST235/85/16, G-rated, Hartland tires (Gladiator clones) on our 5r have an "N" speed rating (87 MPH). Both the "ST" designator and the "N" speed rating are clearly imprinted on the sidewall.

The load G all steel ply or poly carcass tires are designated as commercial class ST tires and have little in common with a ST C/D/E poly carcass tire that has been so problematic in the past.

As others have mentioned some of the ST C/D/E are now speed rated above 65 mpg which may or may not determine better reliability or increased miles of service that can match a LT or the ST G commercial class tires.
Lets all hope they will.

I figure if I have an ST tire that's got an M or N speed rating, and I only drive 65, or less, that tire =should= last longer. What I'm hoping with my Carlisles, anyway. 🙂

My 15" MAXXIS are the best tires yet. Whatever you decide I recommend tires rated to carry the full trailer GVWR.

There are quite a few "ST" tires that do have a 65 MPH speed rating. However, is it accurate to say all "ST" tires have a 65 MPH speed rating?

The Carlisle RH and HD both have > 65 mph rating.

I'll just add my vote to the others. Went from Marathons to Maxxis and never looked back. I am also very careful about speed and pressure.

I am going to disagree with Jim as the research I've done shows the maxxis to be a very good choice.

I believe Jim was pretty accurate in his statement.

I had Maxxis LRD when my fiver was delivered and they lasted ~18 months before the sidewalls started cracking.

Put Maxxis LRE on the trailer for ~26 months before I had a sidewall separation. Changed out the tire and headed back to town to replace my spare. TPMS alerted me to another low pressure issue on a different tire. Was lucky to make it back to town. The remaining two tires were failing as well.

All this on my previous 10K lb 5er.

Just purchased Carlisle tires for my fiver. Got the Radial Trail HD model from DT and will see how they run.

I've had excellent results with Maxxis on my RV's. In fact have had excellent results from all ST tires. On the last 3 RV's, after the Tow Masters, the Trailer Kings, Duro's & Greenballs all wear out....yes wear out, not blow out....haven't had a China bomb blow yet. I do replace em with Maxxis 8008's ST's.

I've looked at the Lt option before but maybe thinking of a different size. Regardless the capacity is too close for my comfort. The maxxis are in and March 2016 mfg date so that is the choice for this go round. Thanks for the options though.

Cheers

Comparing ST capacity to LT tire is not the best idea. The two tire types are tested to different standards. ST tires got their inflated ratings based on the 65 mph speed restriction. Now Carlisle and maybe others with the use of mirrors and magic are raising the speed restriction. Not sure how they can do that other than in their marketing department. Carlisle with the RH release claims the new Nylon cap/ply is a great improvement. However the Marathon got the Nylon addition in the late 90's, and we know how will they last.

Anyway keep us updated from time to time on how your new tires are doing. Chris

Paul, there are 16" LT's in 215/85R16E that are 30.39" in diameter. They are rated to 2680 each and would be a good fix for your lighter weight.

Bridgestone Duravis R250 all steel or R265 2 ply poly carcass.

Or

Michelin XPS Rib

6-8 years of trouble free trailering, and you will not wear them out.

Chris

Both too wide.

How can 215 be too wide when you are currently running 230's?? The tread width is measured in Millimeters, a millimeter is a millimeter, those tires are 15 millimeters narrower than what you are running!
