Need Advice on 5th Wheel

Hello, I currently have a 2001 Ford F-250 Super Duty. It is a 6.8L V-10 Gas Engine with an automatic transmission.

The axle ratio is 3.73
GCWR Max.(lbs.)16,500
Maximum Trailer weight is 10,600
Tires are BF Goodrich 265/70R17

I am interested in a 2004 Weekend Warrior LE3505 5th Wheel (35 foot). I have researched the specifications and this is what I have found

The axle weight is 7683 lb.
# of axles = 3
Hitch weight = 1775 lb.
GVWR = 16000 lb.
Payload = 6000 lb.

My Question is if my Ford F-250 is capable in towing this trailer. Any advice and information would be greatly appreciated.
  • Per your post/specs...
    Truck
    Maximum Trailer weight is 10,600

    Trailer
    GVWR = 16000 lb.

    Trailer has a 6000# payload so 16,600 GVW minus 6000# payload is a 10,000# 'dry' weight trailer

    Truck has a mfg. 10,600# tow rating

    Do you think this is the right trailer to be towed by your truck :H

    Truck payload will be maxed long before you reach that mfg. tow rating.
    Need to stick to a 10,000# GVW trailer or you will be exceeding trucks GVW, RAWR, Tire loading Capacity etc.
  • Are you sure your GCVWR is only 16.5? I have a 2002 and it's 20k lbs. either way it will be under all of its legal weight ratings in California. Also are you sure the GVWR is 16k on the trailer? It should say on the sticker near the front. They usually are 15k in those years.
  • I had a 99 with the same setup, and the weight of your proposed rig sounds too large.
    I know the trailer I have now caused it to squat more then I was happy with, and it's smaller and lighter (loaded) then the one you are looking at
  • Hitch weight = 1775 lb.
    GVWR = 16000 lb.

    That's a 3,200# pin weight at 16,000# so your over there too.
  • In 2 simple words. No Way!

    A 16k# GVWR FW is diesel dually country. No SRW Pickup is going to be able to handle that trailer due to payload limitations. You are probably limited to a FW in the 10k# GVWR with that truck. Means a 30' or so FW with light weight frame.
  • Those weights seem pretty light to me, and I have the LE3305. Mine with no toys or water weighs around 9200lbs and has a pin weight north of 2400lbs. Your truck will tow it, but it is a large trailer. Should you tow it, that's up to you. We like ours. Good luck.

    You should take a trip loaded for camping across some CAT scale for a reality check on your real weights.
